Hi,

I have a feeling this is a bit low tech for this section...

Today I've built myself a portable stereo for use on my building site as I'm very disappointed with the available options.

I have used what I have in the garage so that I won't mind if it gets destroyed however it is a decent Panasonic HU mated to a pair of good 120w nom. 9" Pioneer speakers in a 9mm plywood box with a 12v battery from my daughter's go kart.

Currently I have one sealed box with a HU and 2 speakers in it.

To get the best sound I presume I want to place a divider in the box to isolate the speakers from each other or should I just stuff some fibreglass in there (I seem to remember that was what we used in sub boxes many years ago)

I'm not expecting miracles I just to get the best bang for zero cost.

Cheers

I'm not convinced deviding it up will make much differance as the seperation comes from the high range, sound deadening material will kill the box and improve the sound, , how long does the battery last?

I only knocked it up yesterday.

So deaden it with flashband or fibreglass ?

As it will run a go kart for at least an hour I'd expect it to last at least a day or two.

But I've got plenty of larger ones if needed.

You'll probably need some ports in the box if you want some low end grunt.

If by ports you mean holes - no problem - what kind of size / no. / location ?

If you mean buying a plastic horn shaped thing - sorry zero cost build is the aim.

get sone bog rolls, make holes in the front to fit, then slide them in and out untill they sound best, then glue them in. Just like Blue Peterthumbup

I like your thinking however I can do better than loo rolls - I have plenty of plastic waste pipe lying around.

That's good advice, I had a pair of no name floorstanders that produced bugger all bass until I cut an extra hole in the back of each cabinet. The difference in bass output was considerable and moving the tubes in and out varied it as well. I couldn't understand why the manufacturers hadn't bothered to do it in the first place, lazy sods.

Well it's become obvious why the stereos weren't still fitted in cars I thought it was because they were missing cages and surrounds...

No.1 the radio sounded pretty good but the CD player didn't work.

No.2 had no wiring

No.3 was a mini disc player

However No.3's wiring fitted No.2 and the CD player worked !

OMG it sounds better than any portable stereo I've ever heard.

I'd guess due to the decent make / size speakers and because the ply box is stiffer than thin plastic.

On half volume it's painfully loud when tested in the kitchen.

I'll brave the rain to find a "port"

I knew I should have done this years ago
