What you need is to dump the pc, get an iPad and an Apple TV.

Catch-up TV is a free app and once on your iPad (or iPhone) you then simply choice to watch it on the Apple TV which is plugged into your big TV.

Simples!

As long as you don't intend to do this wirelessly, fill yer boots:

smile

Or you could just go and hand over hundreds of £ to Apple silly

There are wireless ways if you have the right TV, but as you're calling it 'old' that probably means more £. Further info here:

I've got a freesat box but to be honest I prefer watching on Eurosport. Thanks for all the other suggestions guys, more study needed.

Yes to streaming, yes to connectivity, yes to networks, yes to Apple (actually FOAD Apple) but,,,,,,,,,,

sometimes a simple cable is the best, easiest, cheapest, most stable, quickest, least-Apple solution of all.

So Odie & Mr Dentressangle
Am I right in thinking that oneend plugs into a standard outlet socket o a PC (Toshiba) and the other into a standard HDMI in socket on a TV (Panasonic)?
If so I'm off to order up the bits, ps which is better the one piece or the two pieces..?

If your PC has HDMI out then yes.

If not, you'd need a DVI to HDMI.

you need to check the output on your PC, if it has a large white connector with lots of pin holes for a monitor then you will need the dvi to hdmi connector, if you computer has a hdmi socket (looks similar to usb but will be next to a dvi connection) then you dont.

DVI and HDMI are the same (similar anyway) standard so are interchangeable,

you may have even got a dvi to hdmi adapter with your pc if it doesnt have hdmi out.

You may also have to have a tinker with your graphics settings turn on the audio over HDMI setting so the sound goes down the HDMI cable not to your PC speakers. If you want to use your tellys speakers.

being totally illiterate in this respect, there are a number of outlets, 3 x USB, a one with 3 rows of 5 pins and a symbol looks like a TV screen, and a one next to the USB which I think is a network cable, it has a symbol of three squares connected next to it.

Most PC connections are colour coded.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3...

Thats a DVI connector (note its white)

Below is a HDMI connector, note the tapered corners which make it different to USB(not colour coded)

And last is the old monitor connection the VGA port (note its blue)

have a look on the back of your PC and Telly and let us know which ones you have

Yes it seems to be a VGA
Does that mean I cannot link the lap top to a TV with HDMI
Actually the TV seems to have loads of options, its the lap top is the restriction
