Morning People. My Father has an apartment in Majorca and has since pretty much day 1 had a really awful box for receiving a satelite signal. I think it's made by IRIS and is extremely poor. Whilst over there this year on Holiday I got talking to a few ex-pats and English Bar owners who said why didn't I just pick up a cheap SKY box in the UK, bring it out to the apartment and use that instead? I mean, the dish on the roof of the apartments is obviously pointing in the right direction it's just the box which is crap.

Anyone done this, know if this is true?

Thanks.

Simon.

Always wondered this. A friend's mum has a house in the Bahamas. What would stop you using a Sky set up out there? Surely as long as the dish is pointing towards the satellite or is it a bit more complicated than that.

Would rather watch Sky than all those advert blighted US channels.

So I can source one over here (any pointers for that? anything to make sure it's got - card wise?), get it out there and just plug and play?

How much for one just out of interest?

Thanks for the help.

Simon.

We have a sky box in apartment in Cyprus , can't get sky channels basically seem to get free view channels which is enough for us any way
I think you can register a card in the uk and match it to the box then use it aboard but anytime they send out a updated card it can be a pain

Well that sounds the sort of thing I'm after. We don't need SKY Movies or all the Sports stuff (that's what the bars are for right?), but it would be nice to pick up something more than BBC Midlands and ITV Ireland.

So I need a SKY box, that has a card of some sort in it?

You can get a "free view" card from sky for a tenner and put in the box , I have a cheap sky box that I bought local in Cyprus

Search the sky website for the free view cards

The Astra sattelite that transmits SKY is focused on Europe, therefore unless the SKY signal is re-transmitted by other satellites that cover the Bahamas, i think that it won't work.

I think I have a box in the garage if you are interested. Don't know where you are geographically, and I would have to investigate the box, but the offer is there.

A Skybox will give you some free to air channels without a card, a few more are available by putting in any card, however to get the full compliment you need a 'Freesat from Sky' card and register it to the box, you need a UK address for the registration but after that you can take the card and box away. Cost of card is £25 IIRC. Google it for info.

Alternatively just get a 'Freesat' box and that will give you all the FTA channels plus more without the need for a card, get one with a PVR function if you want to record/+ function.

Correct it will not work. The Astra footprint does not reach the Bahamas.

A Freesat box? Now that's a good shout actually, would certainly do away with all the 'do I need a card' problem, especially as the 150 or so channels they offer will be more than enough to cover what we're looking for.

Best to buy in the UK and then take out? I'm assuming that you'd need to give it a quick go here in the UK to set it up to say that's it the UK channels you want?

Simon.

Does he need a new telly? Might be easier to buy a tv with freesat built in? You can pick up old sky boxes on eBay. I got about £50 for mine

Freesat is definitely the way to go. No need to set it up in the UK first - when you first plug in the box in Majorca it will ask you for a postcode so as to determine whether you should receive BBC London, BBC South, BBC North East, etc. Just plug in whatever UK postcode you want (depending on the regional news you fancy receiving) and you're good to go. The box will have no idea that it's in Majorca - as long as it can see the Astra satellites, then it'll be happy.
