i have a camper van. the stereo is an old ken wood unit and i've found a lead that has a standard headphones male on one end and plugs into the back of the stereo on the other. It means that i can plug it into my iPod and play the music directly through the radio.

what i would like to do is build an iPod dock into the dash. I'll do this by putting the standard iPhone dock in a custom enclosure in the dash area. i'll rig a 12v socket and usb adaptor to provide power to the dock and plug the radio headphone lead directly into the back of the dock. Then all i'll need to do is put the iPod/iphone into the dock and it'll charge and pump music through the stereo.

Easy so far. the issue is that the radio connector lead will be enclosed within the custom enclosure. if a passenger has another mp3 player that only has a headphone socket they won't be able to plug it into the dash.

my idea is to have a switch (DPDT) and use a pair of headphone (male-female) extenders.

2x headphone extension leads cut into half. the female ends connected to the centre of a switch. the male end on the end of the switch and into back of iPod dock -

the other male end from the 2nd extension lead goes into the other end of the switch and then through the dash to an mp3 player.

the female end from the centre of the switch into the male end of the lead that connects to the stereo.

hopefully the diagram will make more sense.

i'll connect the wires to the switch with crimped connections. I know the easiest way is to have the headphone jack just poking through the dash and connect it to whichever mp3 player or iPhone is used but if i were to use this method will it knacker sound quality?

Thanks ( i hope it made sense)

It'll be a whole lot easier just to put a new head unit in that has an Ipod connector already built in...

They cost buttons nowadays.
