Does anybody have any recommendations for a turntable? I have no idea what I'm looking for, the price I need to be looking at paying etc...

Basically I want a turntable that can plug into my current Hi-Fi via the Aux-in connection. I don't want to do any mixing, DJ'ing or other good stuff - Just put my vinyl in, press play and have a beautiful noise come from my current speakers via my Hi-Fi.

Thanks in advance.

All budget dependant here. If you're looking to spend a couple of hundred, look at the entry level rega and pro-ject turntables. You won;t be disappointed. If you're looking around 1k and fancy a chunk of beautiful engineering, the Michell Gyrodec SE comes up second hand at around that. Look for a RB300 or Michell tecnoarm A fitted. I found this combo sounds great with a Denon DL304 cartridge. If you give an idea of spend/quality, people can be more specific. There are many turntables available!

You will not be able to just plug it in to the AUX input. Most Cartridges mounted on the arms have a very low output hence the use of a dedicated Input on older amps. You can buy a Transformer to do this if the amp does not have one. Projekt also do a turntable that will connect directly to a standard AUX input.

There's no "Play" button either, unless you get a turntable like this

Budget = something that will work for as cheap as possible. I don't want the sound to be awful but I'm just after something that will sound decent to the average lad. If I have to spend £100 I will but if could spend £50 and get something I would.

More of a novelty thing than an engineering amazement to me. I don't want heaps of kit either, as little/simple as possible please.

Bought one of these a couple of months ago - seems to do everything you want - certainly suits me.

That looks decent that. I'll check back here on Saturday morning andnif there's no other suggestions I think I'll go along and get that.

Cheers.

Just went and got this one. Perfect for what I wanted. Now just a decent record store for vinyls?

EDIT: http://www.maplin.co.uk/profile-pro-usb-turntable-... - This one.

That's NOT a turntable. Come back when you realise how crap it is.

If you could stretch your budget to a technics SL-1200/1210, you would have a top quality deck. Had 2 many years ago when I was a bedroom DJ, those were the days smokin

I plugged it into my Hi-Fi system, put my record on and spin the record. Sound comes out of my speakers. Just what I needed. If, after a year or so I buy some records and build up a little collection I will buy something a bit more long term and expensive but for now, that is exactly what I wanted.

Explain what's so bad?

Basically it's too cheap to play records well. A record requires a stable platform with fairly rigid components and speed satbility. These things tend not to have that combination.
