Front speakers above tv - a big no no?

Convinced the wife that the alcove in the lounge needs the telly in rather than shelves...
Anyway it is 900mm from the floor to the bottom of the alcove (alcove only 180mm deep) so the tv will have to be wall mounted.
But I dont want the tv high up - can I hang it low down and put the soundbar above it? Or split the soundbar and have it to the sides of the tv?
