My dear old C.D. player Marantz CD-65DX, amplifier NAD 3130, coupled to Tannoy Gold speakers has served me very well. However, a recent need of high volume has shown the bass cones in the speakers are past the sell by date, distortion being apparent at sound levels previously performed cleanly.
My question is should I simply have replacement cones fitted or replace the speakers full stop? If replace with what would you suggest? Thanks for comment and advise.

marantz cd 65 man thats a blast from the past the best i could get at the time was philips cd473
I would be inclined to replace but suspect that costs may be expensive
The problem with going for new ones is that you may simply not find anything you like as you are so "used to them" A while back my sony apm's developed a fault I bought dome others AFTER listening tests and just couldnt rate them the same I got the sonys fixed

Yup, dear old kit is getting on a bit, I bought it all from a Hi-Fi shop in Brentwood, think I paid about 350 quid for the lot! got five C.D's thrown in as well, they cost around twelve quid each back in the mid eighties.
I listened to a fair few speakers teamed with my choice of amp/player and found the tone quality ideal for me with the Tannoy's. See no reason to change player or amp at the moment, so maybe tug along my amp to a few Hi-Fi shops for some speaker demo's perhaps.

I just upgraded my 30 year old Technics amp and Wharfdale speakers.

I now have a Yamaha AS1000 amp and Dynaudio DM6 speakers which combined with my turntable and CD player really are awesome.

If you have a good stereo shop nearby I would recommend you at least give the speakers a go.

I have absolutely no idea of how much money I need to pay for modern comparable speakers that would suit my amp and player. A completely wild guess at 400/500 quid?

Are these the original Tannoy Gold dual concentric speakers, 1950's vintage .... if so fix them !! have a look on Ebay for the going rate. I seem to recall that Tannoy used the name on a re-issued version of the Tannoys more recently. The speakers do deteriorate over time, especially around the bass drivers as the paper wears out.

Have a look at Wembley Loudspeakers;

They will recondition your drive units for less money than a new pair of speakers, and if you like them ... you get to retain the sound as new.

They do mail order, I've used them for professional Audio gear, they have a good reputation.

Maybe worth a call.

Thanks for info'. I purchased my speakers in the mid 1980's as new products back then. I will have a look at the cost of reconditioning with Wembley.

They did my old JBLs a few years ago and I have no complaints about their service. They are not in Wembley, however!

Do you have a photo? Would be odd for Tannoys of that age to develop cone problems, more likely the surrounds.

If it is the speakers then i'd get them fixed. To get the same sound quality from new speakers in the shops at the moment could prove difficult and expensive.

They are the best part of your system by a distance imo!

Good website for tannoys://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/

I'm still pondering about my speakers, been away on holiday and too busy with other stuff. But now I have given the speakers another go. It is just one speaker giving trouble, I have closely inspected the cone and that looks in good condition. It seems its the small central driver? that is the problem causing the distortion. I sit possible to simply replace this part? Thanks for advise.

If you do decide to go for new speakers, I'd advise against taking your kit to a hi-fi shop and then buying based on the demo there. You really need to demo at home.

I was speaker shopping a couple of years back. Demo'd several at the hi-fi shop, including one set of floor standers which I was absolutely blown away by. My initial budget was reasonably high to start with - these were significantly more, but I very nearly bought them on the spot. They were just soooooo good.

Took them home for a demo, and they were absolutely shocking. For some reason, my room just does not suit floor standers and they were utterly flat and lifeless.

The room can make a very big difference to speaker sounds, and well worth a demo at home.

You can get some great sounding stuff by doing a bit of internet study and........then buying from Richer Sounds.
You can always spend more and there will be diminishing returns. In which go to an independent and test stuff at home- every house is different.

I suspect they are fairly cheap, (at the time), speakers paired up with that setup. Hence the replacement bass cones may not be worthwhile. Modern Tannoys that would cover them would be the Mercury V1 and the floor standing Mercury v4's At £99 and £250-ish I'd look into them rather than try to revive the m20's I believe you have.

Thanks Telecat, thinking back to when I purchased my gear I did put emphasis on the amp and player. I can't recall how much I paid for the speakers but they would certainly cost less than the other two items.
I have just given my speakers a work-out at high sound levels and I can actually see a 'split' on the outer circumference of the base cone, so will defo' be a re-cone or new speakers. I will have a look at the recommendations you have mentioned. Thank you.
