I have an old ex-rental Sony TV/video of circa 1998 vintage.
Lately it has been flickering between on of various picture sizes, then will settle down on the proper size. Now the sound will turn itself down to nothing and won't turn back up again uless it is stitched off and even then sometimes won't turn back up.
The red, standby light does 5 flashes then does out
It gets its signal via the medium of Freesat.
Is it likely to be the telly or the Freesat box?
It has a really good picture and I am loathed to get an LCD telly because I am yet to see one with a picture as good.If I did need a new telly, what do you recommend?
Thanks.

Flashing stby light is a fault code, usually LOPT power supply fault. Might just be capacitors which should be about £60 repair if its the whole unit then look at £120+
For a replacement good branded makes like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung LED sets with FULL HD tuners will give good picture results but they do need to be set up correctly. They come set to economy modes which switches off a lot of the picture enhancement facilties such as noise reduction filters and 100hz scan even the backlight is turned down on the LCD sets and these need to be switched on to get best out of set. Steer clear of budget sets, you get what you pay for at the end of the day, they're cheaper for a reason

Did I miss something?Back on topic, is it likely to be the Freesat box? The sound is fine now, but just turns itself up and down as it sees fit. I saw that a new Sony is 500 notes. This brought me out in a fever.

Still sounds like tv tbh, have you anything else plugged in (dvd, vcr etc) if so does the fault show on these aswell. Also try plugging scart into the other scart socket, you should have at least 2 scarts on that sort of tv. Flashing stby light though from original post describes classic power or main board fault. TBH its a common Sony fault seen it hundreds of times and the set has done very well to last this long, 8-10 years was the norm.Gassing Station | Home Cinema & Hi-Fi | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
