What's out there at the minute? Something slim ideally (not a tablet), don't care about connectivity or screens just a headphone jack and plug and play USB.

Unfortunately it seems they don't do much beyond 32GB

Could have sworn they used to do high capacity devices.

Any other suggestions before I succumb to an iPod Classic?

If you get a classic, you do not have to se iTunes. You can use sharepod, (or detune if on OSX), so don't let that put you off. The classic is a superb player. I'm not up to date on the latest and greatest mp3 players I'm afraid. Maybe try Archos, or cowon maybe? No idea on their capacities.

To Google! It'll probably never leave the car if I'm honest beyond sticking new albums on.

Very happy with sandisk stuff, have a creative mp3 player that I still use on a daily basis that's over 5 years old as well.

A lot of the new stuff supports microSD, so a 64GB upgrade is only £30 off.

That said, if you want big storage, Apple is probably the way to go, if you can live with iTunes or one of the alternatives to manage your music...

I'm running an ipod classic 160GB in the car using a Connects2 lead to the OEM headunit and it works like a wee dream!

I have circa 10,000 songs on it and still working my way through random play biggrin

When I looked, there really was no viable alternative.

Viable, better sounding and with an astonishing battery life to boot, Cowon X7.
