SACD - What to do next...
Discussion
Hot on the heels of my other thread on my 26 year old Phillips CD960 (currently in at Audio T having the dim display looked at) looking for some advice re SACD. Specifically, is it dead? I "replaced" the Phillips unit about 9 years ago with a Sony DVP - NS900V DVD/CD/SACD Player as I wanted a quality unit that did everything. This is linked to an Arcam AVR200 5.1 amp and B & W DM 302 floorstanders, 301 rears and matching centre speaker - again all of the same vintage. Very pleased with the amp and speakers and have no intention of changing them. But what do I do with the Sony?
It provides far more detail than the Phillips can manage, and a DVD played on it blows my £100 Samsung Bluray player bought to match my Samsung (UE5800 blah, blah,) LED tv out of the water. But the sound is harsh compared with the Philips. If I'm honest it was the ability to play SACD's that tempted me and with War of the Worlds, Dark Side of the Moon, Aero (JMJ) etc it is very good. I also am keen to go digital and start streaming.
So my options are:
a. Keep both players, get a Sonos to stream from my PC etc.
b. Sell the Phillips to fund an Arcam rDACKW to stream from my PC etc.
c. Sell both, get something like an Audiolab 8200 to play CD's and stream in one unit, forget about SACD.
Realively new to the concept of streaming. Is it possible to copy an SACD onto PC and retain 5.1 surround (and stream it). Haven't managed to get my PC to read the disk yet. alternatively, is it possible to buy 5.1 surround downloads.
Discuss...
PS - sadly, whatever the replacement unit is I don't want something black as it won't match my amp!
Cheers.

The only way to rip a SACD is with a hacked PS3 (this should give you enough to go searching). You'll then need a DSD capable DAC to stream it to, which are still relatively thin on the ground, but they exist.
DVD-Audio is much easier to rip and easier to playback - just get a good USB 24bit / 192KHz DAC.
I'm similar to you in that I have well over a hundred SACDs and DVD-Audio discs and wasn't really sure where to go next. I've started to experiment with HD downloads from the likes of Linn, Naim and B&W and plan now to replace my Denon-2900 (similar functionality to your Sony but is DVD only not Blu-ray)) with an Oppo BDP-105 when they are released later this year. Offers SACD, DVD-A and Blu-ray playback via high quality D2A electronics and doubles as a USB DAC. Seems like a good convegence product that will get the best out of rips and downloads and allow be to enjoy SACD and DVD-A as well as or better than before, adding Blu-ray music disc enjoyment for me, without spending stupid money. Does not work as a DSD DAC though - at least not at launch.

You can get DSD ISO images files from the net and burn them to a DVD. The only problem being that the Discs are missing a timing code that older SACD players use as a refernce point. Newer Players don't seem to use it and can play them as SACD discs.

Should let you know if yours is one of them.
SACD discs are still big in Japan. Queen's back catalogue was released this year although it is relatively expensive. EBAY and Amazon also have lots available but they do cost!!
