You've compared both, together, with settings adjusted to sensible viewing levels?
Yep. Had both in same room found some suggested settings on avforums. Calibrated by side by side watching of dark night. The Samsung is easily as good if not better than the panny imho. The panny was 4years old mind.FunkyGibbon said:

Aah it was the use of the word "is" and not the correctly used "was" that had me confuddled!

+1 and in my view they are more stylish than the functional looking Panasonics Another vote for the Panasonic TX-P55VT50B here.
Just upgraded to one of these (from 13 year old Panasonic 36" CRT).
Preferred the picture to other screens, but demo rooms are not the most representative of what you'll see at home. What was visible though when looking at different screens was the black levels on the VT50 were very black - the black border and the picture when dark seemed to merge, whereas most other screens with a black surround you could see the black surround and the dark grey of the image rather than it being black (if this makes sense).
Advice generally from AV forums etc has been that if viewing in a very bright environment, then LED may be the way to go. Fortunately our room is not very bright and the plasma has a really good picture.
SD scaling as already mentioned depends quite a bit on source material - most channels are ok, but some like Food Network (Mrs C&C watches it) don't look great - but I'm sure that's the rubbish source material.
When looking for the screen, my only concern was for HD picture quality. I didn't care about 3D, but have been actually quite impressed with 3D performance also - got a Panasonic DMP-BDT500EB BluRay player at the same time.
Finally, whilst I was going to get it from John Lewis, my local Panasonic store was happy to match the current offer at the Panasonic store in Lakeside for £1999 including 6 year guarantee. Not sure whereabouts in the country you are, but this is in London, and apparently there are stores further up north offering similar prices (Bradford, Sheffield etc).

About to pull the trigger on a VT50 myself I think. I find the LED screens a bit too bright.Anywhere in London/SE by any chance ?
Best place I have found to look at screens is Selfridges because it's in the basement and not got very bright lighting.
I'd like to see go somewhere that has a variety of sources though and happy to travel.
It's incredible that these manufacturers spend all this money on R+D and then on retailers to display their product who generally doing a horrendous job of it.
A mate of mine bought a 55" Samsung 3D LED tv last year. Really odd experience watching it. I couldn't work out why to begin with,, but I think it was because the image it presented was sharper, brighter and more colourful than anything in the room. Or that I had ever seen in the real world. In short, it looked other worldly.
Right now we have a Sny KDL40X2000, which we've had since it came out. It produces a nice HD image, and does not produce an image that looks unreal. But it's time for a change.

Samsung TV's are set up by the manufacturer to function in bright shop lighting. You really need to work on the settings when you get them home but once done they are no different in image quality and colour saturation to Sony and Pany.Right now we have a Sny KDL40X2000, which we've had since it came out.
