I need to get a new tv and have got 2 in mind.
The first is the Samsung UE40ES5500 - £450 @ John Lewis. It's a 40" led tv smart tv.
The second is the Samsung UE40ES6540 - £600 @ John Lewis. The main difference is this is a 3d tv.
Not sure what to get do I just go for the £450 one as it has all the features I want at the moment, or do I go for the 3d one. ( My budget was £450 but happy to stretch it a little if need be)
i plan on using the tv for 3-4 years until it gives up. My current LCD hitachi is nearly 6 years old now and was working fine until today. I don't want to repair it as the local tv guy said it would be a few hundred so better of replacing it.
Just torn as to wether to future proof and get the 3d one or just stick with the normal one. Will 3d go the same way as hd and be a must in a few years.

A projector is not adoption, needs to be a tv.
I have noticed done bigger tv's for less but 40" is the biggest I can go for, considering the size of the room and the space on the wall.
I really like the look of the slim LED one and have also been given a new wall mount for Xmas, the ones that allow you to hang a tv like a picture frame so it's very sleek and close to the wall.

Have you considered a projector? I bought one last year and project onto just a white wall. The 10 foot wide HD image is the best thing ever.

I too was in the same pridicament, old toshiba has packed up and we did have a 5yr warranty with JL.We went for the 3D samsung but only because we needed to upgrade from what they offered us to get the 5yr warranty again.
You wont be disappointed with either of the samsung ones you have chosen. The 3d is stunning but there isn't that much out there in 3d, the picture on std sky (not HD) is fantastic, we run our sound throught a Roth "subzero" soundbar. The wireless conectivity on the more expensive one is great and the smart hub is good. There is a few 3d programs in the smart hub. At £600 it seam a bargin as we got ours 2 weeks ago at the full price.

3D is not the only difference. Comparing a 6 series to a 5 series gives you a better specced panel and a better machine overall not to mention a thinner bezel around the edge. I have a 6540 in 32 inch form in the bedroom and its much better all round than the 5500. Worth the extra 150 notes no contest, look at them side by side, the motion quality is not comparable

Great TV for the price.
Reviews will tell you the sound is poor but I've not found that to be the case at all.
HD is really good and the standard picture is more than acceptable from a normal viewing distance.
I have a window more or less opposite and reflection isn't really an issue.
The SMART functions are really good. ITV Player, BBC iplayer, youtube TV (lots of Car and Driver / EVO TV videos) etc.
I debated 3D at the time but how often are you going to watch it? Not for me.
The only downside I can think of (and I think its pretty common to all LED tvs) is the slightly poor viewing angles. If you are off to the side its not easy to see well.
You can also plug in a USB stick and use it as a PVR / pause live TV etc.
For the money I don't see how you can go wrong.
