No DVI signal through an HDMI port?
Discussion
Over last two years I was running a cheap LG 5.1 Blu Ray unit with one HDMI connected to a Panasonic 720p projector. It worked fine, however it always bothered me that because it only had one HDMI out I couldn't choose whether I want to watch BR, Games or TV either through the projector or telly without moving things and switching cables (I've tried HDMI splitters and switchers and none of them worked 100%).
So yesterday I was very happy when while visiting Richer Sounds I've noticed ONKYO TX-NR515, first cheap AV receiver with dual HDMI Out.
I bought it and a new set of speakers and started connecting everything £600 lighter but looking forward to finally having a proper setup.
And of course... it doesn't work
Both HDMI outs work fine when I switch cable, but for some reason there is no DVI out signal coming out (my Panasonic projector is old and hasn't got HDMI input, only DVI but it worked perfectly fine with old LG through a HDMI to DVI cable). I've tried everything, upgraded the firmware etc, all relevant options in the menu but still nothing.
Am I right thinking that there should be no difference between DVI and HDMI signal, if it worked before it should work now?
However, from experience my Macbook pro also never worked with the DVI projector over an HDMI cable so there could be something to it.
Is there another converter I could buy, not just the HDMI - DVI cable?

There can be all sorts of issues using DVI and HDMI together: I used to own an older video processor that only had DVI connectors and it just wouldn't work if I used adaptors, they had to be DVI to HDMI cables. It could be something to do with HDCP as well. DVI doesn't carry audio which might be causing some issue as well: Is it possible to turn the audio off for the HDMI output in the amp?
If non of the above help, then you could always use as an excuse to upgrade the projector.
Also make sure you haven't enabled 'deepcolour' in the amp if it has the option (it is a waste of time anyway as no current sources use it). Also check to see if the amp has options for output. I'm talking about RGB, YCrCb (4:2:2 or 4:4:2) if you find a menu with these options. Your projector might only accept one of these options, so you'll have to try each setting (and maybe disconnect the cable, or change inputs in the projector to get it to do another 'handshake' to test each option.

I suspect that because the onkyo is getting hdmi in,it's expecting hdmi out. It can detect that there is no audio return via the dvi so is throwing a strop.
If you have a tv with hdmi in , try connecting that up and the hdmi should the accept the handshake, then unplug it whilst the amps still on and plug the hdmi to DVI into your projector. If it works . .. That's your problem.

Page 90 of the user manual seems to Indicate that your projector may need to be hdcp compliant. Is it ?

I thought you may be onto something but seems it is. It's Panasonic PT-AE500E and all the reviews suggest it is HDCP compliant.http://www.uk.onkyo.com/downloads/2/0/6/7/4/Manual...
I don't know what else to do, but I'm pissed off with all the money spent and STILL not being able to do one thing that I wanted.

And the projector works really well. It displays fine when connected straight to BluRay player. I really don't want to spend hundreds more just to upgrade to something with HDMI.
