LoveFilm v Netflix v Sky streaming service
Discussion
This is the reason I've stuck with Blockbuster on line. I've gone to a fair bit of expense lately on my AV gear and buying some proper calibration equipment. It seems a bit silly to then knobble it all with low bitrate compressed content (even if technically it is 'HD' the bitrate is much reduced) and without the full HD soundtrack too. However on smaller displays and those without separates then perhaps it's a more convenient option...I just hope that it doesn't become the only option.
Agree with toxicnerve. I thought about switching to the LoveFilm streaming service because I assumed it would have a similar range to the disc-delivery service we've been using for a few years, but when I started browsing the collection it's nowhere near comparable. It's like looking through the £1 DVD bin in Asda.
The Sky thing they're advertising at the moment looks like it'd have better content but bloody hell it's expensive. I enjoy watching films but not enough to shell out £180 a year.

We're keeping the LoveFilm disc rental service for now because I don't think any alternatives are up to the job yet. I got the WDTV mainly to connect up the only TV not currently on the home network so we can view our own stuff as well as internet radio, iPlayer, YouTube etc. I'm also quite addicted to watching short films and animation on Vimeo so expect to spend hours on that. I prefer it to normal telly to be honest.I've started ripping my humble DVD collection to the NAS. I dunno why - we never watched DVDs so we probably won't stream them either but I feel compelled to do it anyway.

I don't bother with torrents any more. I used to download music with the justification that it was so much easier than going to the shops but now you can buy films and music online at fair prices I'm happy to pay for them.

I still bother with torrents for Blu-ray. I've got BT Infinity so download a Blu-Ray (around 20 gigs) in a couple of hours. Generally use it for Blurays I can't get in the UK.
For ten quid a month we get unlimited films on disc from LoveFilm (two at home at any time) and access to all their online content.
That's a pretty good deal in my opinion. Certainly less than we used to spend at Blockbuster, and we don't have to leave the house.
Sure, they don't have EVERYthing on there, but did Blockbuster ever?
I rang Sky about movies, but they wanted £16 a month for stuff that was older than LoveFilm can get.

Yep, we tend to be very quick on watching what we get sent and sending it back, ready for the next one. While they're in the post we've got the online service to fall back on.There are online categories, but they've just launched "watchlist". You can see all their online content on their website, and you can create a prioritised list of what you might want to watch. It's getting there.

I do the three disc at a time deal with Blockbuster. We tend to watch them over a Friday and Saturday night, then send them back on Monday (or maybe keep one to watch during the week). By the end of the week the next three have arrived, so we get through maybe 15 BluRays a month for £15.99, just over a pound each. I hardly ever buy BluRays these days as I'm not one to watch films over and over apart from maybe concerts, but I occasionally buy discs after I've rented them, so at least I know if they're worth buying. There are online categories, but they've just launched "watchlist". You can get american netflix with some jiggery pokery which has a load of content compared to the u k version
Do you know if it's possible to get an American Netflix through to my Apple TV Netflix app? The ATV is the only thing I watch it on.Tonight I have mostly been cancelling my LoveFilm instant subscription, wasn't impressed with it. Is the Sky streaming service the Now TV service thats being advertised quite a bit lately? Is that any better than what's there now with Netflix UK and Lovefilm? Advert says they get the new films sooner than LF/NF.
We have NF and LF 2 disc deal.
NF for tv series and LF for BR discs and occasional streaming. The interface is better NF in my opinion but not great. Pity that I was playing with Navi-x today and it was slicker and had more content easily available.
I also have ATV and ps3 which means I can rent what appears to be full hd so why the rental services can't do this I have no idea.
The sky think looks expensive and I don't have an Xbox or whatever device you need.
You can get NF USA by using a service like unblock us, it just changes your proxy to a us location and your NF account is global. You can still use uk location services like iplayer.

I used toi have Lovefilm but found the longer I was a subscriber the slower their returns and new discs got and wasn't very happy when they sent disc 2 of a boxset first and then when I wanted the Star trek movie box set despite it being high priority I didn't get a single one for over 6 months so I cancelled.
I've actually just cancelled LF, been with them for a few years now. The reason I cancelled is that although I can use the streaming service on my ipad, I can't get the service on my tv (panasonic)or my media player (iomega). I've tried streaming through my ipad on to my tv and it won't work either.
I haven't used love film but have had netflix for a while now and I have to say that I've found it to be very good, it's perfect if you are into TV series most of which you can stream in HD, granted the movie side is lacking somewhat but the quality is fine for what I stream on (macbook pro) although I can understand that it might not seem like it is up to scratch if you are streaming to a larger TV.
£6 a month is nothing in the grand scheme of things and having watched all of Lost, heroes, prison break, dexter, 24, sons of anarchy, warehouse 13 etc so far its more than paid for itself
