Ok, yet another thread... I've spent weeks reading reviews, going to shops and i'm still overwhelmed with choice that I just cannot bloody decide!

I'm looking for a decent TV to watch movies on and sports (MotoGP etc) on. I watch HD films, HD channels, YouTube stuff from my Apple TV, downloaded films etc, and I might buy a PS3 for some GTA/GT5 as well. Normally watch films in the evening. But ultimately, films are the main thing I will be using it for.

46-51"
3 or more HDMI ports
Smart TV im not bothered about (as I have Apple TV)
3D I'm not really bothered about as I will hardly use it.
Price £900-1200

I'm still undecided whether I should go plasma or LED. Plasma I'm concerned about the image retention and LED I wonder if the colours are less real. LED is cheaper to run.

I've looked a the Panasonic ST50 (50") and the Samsung ES6800 (46"). Samsung is a lovely looking TV and the Panasonic doesn't look that good in the shops (ok, the lighting isn't ideal) but has good reviews. Or should I look at the lesser/cheaper Samsungs like the ES5500?. My apartment is medium natural light, not gloomy not super bright.

Still unsure what to do! Arrghrghgrhg!

Sony KDL 46HX853

Brilliant set, mega reviews & is one of the best on the market for smoothing out (erm) 'borrowed' media.

Yup, Panasonic Leicester did have them for £899.00 including a SIX years warranty and a couple of pair of glasses thrown in.

The GT50 is a good screen. I was all set for sinking my grand into an LED but the GT50 put the cat amongst the pigeons for me. I find plasma far more natural looking with a lot of the lcd panels looking far too sharp and unnatural, may be due to poor setup.

Whathifi tv of the year 2012 iirc.

ETA: I was close, whathifi best 50-52" 2012

Spent nearly 2 hours in a shop playing around with a GT50 and a Samsung 8000 LED. Both very good, but the Plasma had the edge. To plumped for the GT50 in the end. Gets delivered next week.

Have you got one of these? I'm on the verge of ordering one, would been interested to know what you think, especially the 6 degree tilt.

Yeah good move. If plasma was invented next week it'd be seen as a revolution compared to LED backlit LCDs.

I have the 46. It is, quite simply, an outstanding TV. Incredibly natural picture of wonderful quality.

Numerous visitors to my house over the Christmas period all remarked on what a terrific television it is.

I've got the Sony 55" 853. The tilt on the stand is a bit daft, doesn't really bother me though and I'll wall mount it at some point.

The built in apps are a bit clunky but a Raspberry Pi with XBMC soon sorts that out. WiFi and iPlayer are plus points. Being able to add a USB hard disk to record to is moderately useful. The screen's what I was after above all and that's really very good.

I got the Finlux 46".

Finlux used to be Nokia, but are I think owned by a turkish firm now.
It is about £450 and reviews well and has a very good picture. Also it has LOADS of connections like 4 HDMI, multiple scarts, optical out, 3.5mm audio out, it also has a PVR function which can be handy and Freeview HD tuner built in.

Can't see the point in paying more TBH unless you want a bigger one.

Anyone know the difference between the Panny GT50 and the GT50B? Also is the VT50B better or worse?

Finlux got a very good write up in What Hi-Fi?'s latest edition when they reviewed 6 large-screen, low budget sets.

Tip with the Sony I've got btw; the wireless network connection completely screws up the performance of the internet apps, it's much better even with a wired link to a wireless bridge such as a Netgear wnce2001.

Just set up my new 46" Sony 853, and am seriously impressed so far. The cat likes it too, she's trying to hunt birds on 'Africa' on BBC HD!
