Selling hi-fi gear. Where?
Discussion
I’ve got some good quality hi-fi gear to sell (separates and floorstanding speakers). Does anyone have any pointers for good, reliable places to sell these? I’m reluctant to put them on eBay and get stung for fees and bombarded with stupid questions/offers. So I hope to capture a specialist audience.
I am a member of AV Forums and will post them up there, having bought and sold there in the past, but I was wondering where else might I try

Both probably require a certain number of posts before you can post in their classifieds.

You'll get stupid questions/offers wherever you advertise them, people on forums especially AV Forums in my experience love to put in ridiculous offers. At least with eBay you can auto reject offers of a certain value. My experience of selling quite a lot of gear over the years is that eBay has always given me the best return and least hassle, and people like to pay by PayPal as it gives them some protection, not a lot, but some, it also means that they can make a private sale using a credit card.DavidY said:

Nothing is selling at good prices at present.
The old rule used to be 50% new plus drop around 5% per year.
These days it's peanuts for most things.
Used to trade HiFi as a second income back in the 90s. I wouldn't do it now!
There are odd peculiarities, NAD 3020a for one, a bottom of the range amp in the 80s that still sells for £100+ regularly, it's good but not at more than £50.
Find any Royd speakers and the sky is the limit. (Slightly justified in this case).
Ion Systems amps the same and anything with shiny valves.
Not too dissimilar to the classic car world.

That's good as I've got an ion amp to sell shortly, but it's the Nait 1 & 2 that have gone ballistic! The old rule used to be 50% new plus drop around 5% per year.

Projectors are even worse in terms of holding value: I just sold a 4 year old JVC HD350 that I paid £3,300 for new, I got £700 for it with a half used spare lamp. At least the replacement X35 model I bought was over a grand cheaper than the HD350. I once sold a four month old Panasonic projector AE3000 and lost £700 on it: Serves me right for buying it without demo and being in a rush to have the first on in the UK as it was a disappointment and I knew I should have bought the JVC to start with...

Agreed, we scrap kit thats 2 years old because bulb replacements are so expensive. Lifetime of HiFi is rather longer, still running an Exposure XX bought near 20 years ago, never missed a beat except the on/off LED being dead.DavidY said:

I've got a Nait 1 and was astounded at how much they are going for.
I was just going to bin it until the local Naim dealer told me that there is a boyant market for them.
