My parents have had the same TV set up for years. It is all Sony with a DVD player, VCR and CRT TV with integrated digital. The TV has been on its last legs for a few weeks; when they are looking at the channel listings, the text is blurred. They had just resigned to the fact they were going to have to buy a new TV.

A relative just died and my dad has got her TV (I swear he did not do her in to get the telly wink). It is a Samsung LE32C530F1 and looks new.

My parents are technophobes and asked me to set it up. I spotted straight away he had brought the wrong remote home (it was the Virgin Media remote). I found the remote at the weekend when I was helping sort things out at her house.

I've set the TV up for them and everything works except the remote. I have tried the obvious stuff (cleaned the sensor and the IR LED, and changed the batteries). I've tried the trick with the digital camera and I can see the IR LED flashing. I found the manual for it on the Samsung website and there is nothing I can find in there.

My dad said he tried the Virgin remote at her house and it worked, however, it isn't working now. I have got the codes for pairing the Virgin remote with the telly but none of them work.

The TV was connected to the Virgin box by a HDMI cable when he said the remote worked. I understand HDMI can carry signals between devices other than images (such as telling a DVR to record etc) - could the Virgin box be telling the TV to turn on?

Is there anything else I could try?

The Virgin remote will only change the volume and put the TV into standby when paired correctly.

In the manual is the remote on page 5 the same as the one you have?

Do the buttons on the front of the TV all function correctly?

CEC is the protocol for carrying control signals by HDMI and yes it certainly can turn on a TV. However I don't believe a Virgin STB does this.

Do you have any energy saving bulbs in the room. I have known those to interfere with IR remotes, solved by replacing with another energy saving bulb, although I am grasping at straws and suspect the TV or remote is faulty.

Thanks!

The remote has started working but it is intermittent. It was quite dirty which makes me wonder if something was spilt on it. I've tried to open it to give the PCB a clean with some contact cleaner, but it is resisting every effort to take it apart (I think the 16oz technical adjuster may be a little overkill). They've got a cheapo universal remote which is working at the moment.
