Hi all, I have an older Yamaha RXV395 which is a lovely Av Amp, but it has no optical input.
Would one of these take the Toslink optical cable http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Optical-Coaxial-To...
and give me true 5.1 from the amp? fed from the TV optical out.
I think its the right thing I need.

No,it'll give you stereo, same as connecting the TV's headphone output to the amp. You could also use a scart breakout adaptor to get the stereo feed.
Chances are the signal from the TV's optical output will only be stereo, anyway - unless it has an HD (Freeview or Freesat) tuner.

Would my amp not decode the stereo signal to give a kinda faux 5.1 instead of a true 5.1 dolby?

Interested in this myself as I think I have a similar problem, I've just replaced my old Pioneer TV with a Panasonic TX-P50VT50 which has an optical audio out and ARC via the HDMI 2 socket, however, my old Denon a/v amp only has phono inputs, Any help with suggestions how to get the the sound from my TV to the amp (if it's possible) would be appreciated. Don't really want to bin the amp if I can help it.

Sorry the back of my amp has audio inputs for the 5.1 inputs on the left - the only outputs I now have are the optical (tosslink?) from the TV.
My DVD player has the 5.1 out and I have a monster sized cable for that which scores extra man points, but does not solve my issue smile

Cheapest way is to connect the headphone output of the TV to the amp.
Best way is to get a scart connector with left/right audio breakouts (phono sockets), or use a scart to phono lead.

Unless a box of tricks exists that will take an optical input and split it into your 5.1 channels to connect into that amp then it'll probably be cheaper and easier to just buy a new one.

Edit to add.... Google "optical to 5.1"

You should find there is in fact such a device.

Oddly enough I'd googled toslink to phono and not had much success.
It does appear to be a better search query wink

Shameless self bumpage;

I just wanted to confirm with those in the know that this is what I need - as I see it it will take "input" from an optical cable from the apple3 tv or the lg tv and "output"5 channels into the back of the amp for 5 separate amplified channels of sound.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/eSynic-Digital-Adapter-Dec...

Many thanks in advance.

Yeah should do, however I wouldn't be buying one of them if I were you.

As said previously you'll most likely not be getting anything other than stereo from the TV anyway.

For about 30-50 quid you should be able to pick up a more modern amp that has optical inputs. Bought a 2nd hand Denon for a mate for 40 from avforums not so long back.

If the primary use is for TV try and make sure the amp supports Dolby Pro Logic 2. Its much better than the previous version at producing surround effects.

As said above.

Many/most TV's don't do audio pass through. You will get a dolby digital signal from your telly but is won't be full 5.1 - it'll just be stereo.

The apple TV should output the full fat signal though.

I'd also suggest to just get a new amp, it's easier in the long run.
