Being a bit of a techno novice, how do I get my HD-ready Sony Bravia TV able to receive HD channels? I use Freeview, haven't got Sky or cable.

Freeview HD requires a separate tuner that was built in to TVs from 2011 onwards. how old is your Bravia?

Get a Freeview HD set top box or recorder.

Can't quite remember, but I think I got it before 2011.

Something like the boxes on this review. I use a Humax HD PVR which allows me to record as well as watch the Freeview and Freeview HD channels:
