Firstly apologies because I'm a numpty when it comes to all this stuff!

Purchased a Apple TV box in the states on a recent trip. As per the manual it's plugged directly into the telly with a hdmi cable (couldn't really get it to work through AV receiver). It's also got an optical out on the back and says you should plug into your av receiver, which I've done. However the music doesn't play over the surround sound speakers only the telly speakers. Am I missing something? Do you need an opti cable from TV to receiver?

The Apple TV is the latest one, the telly is a Sony kdl 40z5500 and the receiver a Sony str da3500es

Any pointers would be appreciated

Is there a setting in the menu for audio output. Away from mine so can't check.

You may need to tell the receiver which digital (optical) input to take the sound from, otherwise it'll default to HDMI

Have you selected the correct input for the optical in (on your AV Receiver) when using the Apple YV?

My Apple TV was setup like this and worked fine but I think I had to tell the ATV to output over Optical (as well as HDMI).

I changed mine to now go via my AVR via HDMI and have unplugged my optical cable and it is now working fine.

I had to fiddle with the AVR to get it to receive the optical input (and then change it to receive the audio from the HDMI as well as the video).
