Off the the US at the weekend and wondered if Blu Ray films are cheaper and released earlier than here?

Probably.

But they can be region locked. USA is region A, Europe is region B.

It's a mixed bag TBH. Flight, Skyfall and Argo have all been out in the US on BD for a few weeks. These 3 are region-free, but that's just pot luck.

Generally they'll be region A locked, but popular titles seem to be multi-region hence work on UK/Europe Region B players.
