Why do we still have to pay for HD and 3D content?

I mean sky tv and virgin tv services and they surcharges for enabling HDTV and 3D channels?
With 4k TVs already available to purchase, why is it we are forced to pay for progress???

Can I please have my TV signal delivered in black and white and get a subscription rebate?

Just a rhethorical rant really, but I really cannot see how TV providers can justify it.

You are only talking about premium content here as well, all the free to air channels that have HD feeds are free (BBC, ITV etc)

Only reason I have it is because I wanted the F1 channel last year - managed to get 8 months free out of the 12 so a years cost wasn't too bad.
HD itself is OK but the main channels we watch in HD are available free anyway (BBC, ITV etc).

I don't pay for 3D or HD content. I don't receive or use them, because I made a choice based on not wanting to pay for them. While I can have SD 2D content without having to pay extra, I will. And so could you.

Why now, plenty of people silly enought to pay for it, so they charge, same as any business.

I have sky, basic package no sport of movies, I have HD but I threatened to leave and they gave me a free upgrade (same monthly fee)and new box, so not everyone pays.

Given the built-in obsolescence of Sky's hardware, it can't be long now until every sky box in the country is an HD box. At that point they are going to find it hard to justify the 'premium' charge.

1080p as HD isnt that good tbh their is far better HD (1440p and beyond [4320p]) out in other countries but they seem to be waiting here for saturation before they launch the new products, kinda sad really.

DPI is were its at, not resolution.

To be honest, I wouldn't pay money for anything 3D.

HD over SD is worth a premium though.

True but they do and will continue to disable HD content at source to you box

Just wanted to point out I do no own a 3D TV myself as I'm not a fan. I feel in no way superior to people who do though.

Whilst you may be able to get higher res screens (lets not forget high res monitors have been around for 10s of years), I think you'll struggle to find much >1080p video content available at the moment.
