I have a Pioneer plasma from a few years back, which I love, but it is only 720 and the inputs ( HDMI ) are very limiting to say the least.
How would the current plasmas stand up to it in terms of overall quality?
At 43", is plasma still king?

I hated the look of all the flat screens until I found the Panasonic range of Plasmas. I have a GT20 or 30, I think, and the picture is lovely and warm.

We have just set up a new TV Studio and they have equipped it with LG LED TVs as monitors. They look smart and are pencil thin but the picture is awful. So unrealistic and almost cartoon like plus the picture washes out when you view it from a slight angle like you would at home if you have not bagged the exact central place on the sofa.

As Toxicnerve says, the 2012 VT50 range just about got to matching the Pioneer Kuros in most areas

But according to my MD (who went on the 2013 Panasonic product launch) the new VT65 range betters
the VT50 range, but the new flagship set TX-P60ZT65 is by some margin the best he's ever seen!
and he owns a fully calibrated KRP600M Kuro.

Extra info for the OP, the VT50 range is only available in 50" plus (unlike the VT30 where there was a 42" available).

The GT50/ST50 Ranges both come in 42" but the old 43" Pioneer isn't that much smaller than a 50VT50

The TV I have is the Pioneer 43" PDP-434HDE .
What would something like this be worth today? £250?
It is mint, with manuals, but no box.

A great set in its day, but I honestly think it's worth closer to £100-150 myself

Can't say I know details of dimensions, but I did once see the price of the 50VT50 !

On the lack of the 42VT, reviews I saw mid last year rated the 42GT50 above the previous 42VT30 anyway (obviously the latter VT was even better of course).

LOL, if someone offered me £595, I would bite their hand off!
I like the idea of a 50" being the same size more or less. More research needed.

PS, if anyone can get me £595 for mine, there is £150 in it for you!

Yes!
I know it was a little bit of an open question, But I had hoped that there would be quite a few who have upgraded from the earlier Pioneers to later sets. I was looking for real life comparisons. I did think the outcome would be 100% a Panasonic from the last 3 years would be much better, but it seems there are still a few who rate the Pioneer highly.
I would like 1080 and if I am going that far, maybe 50" although Panasonic did / do do a 46". If you know your stuff, I wouldn't mind your opinion on the TH-46PZ80B Panasonic.

The PZ80 is 4 years old now, and was a good set, but the 46" version is probably a similar size to the current 50GT50 set which is
available for under £900 with a 5 Yr manufacturers warranty, if you know were to look wink

PM me and i'll see what I can do..

I've just put a P55VT50 in the kitchen, I have a Kuro 600M in the lounge.

Close, but no cigar. But SO very close I'm now giving serious consideration to moving on the Pioneer and putting a P65VT50 in the lounge as a replacement. 60 was as large as sets went a few years ago, but it's always been a bit on the small side in here, I simply can't sit close enough to it. Sitting up against the 55 in the kitchen has reminded me how far I sit from the Kuro, so the extra 5" is tempting without going overboard.

The Kuro still has the edge in blacks IMO, but the Panasonic seems to just be that smidge bit crisper, but not in an LCD-retina-searing-jaggedy-edge-eyeball-stabbery sort of way. Simply put, the P55VT50 is the first panel I've seen that comes close to the Kuro, and it's oh-so very close I'm not sure outside of optimum conditions one would feel shortchanged.

I am still re-installing clients Kuro's into there new homes rather than pushing them to new screens.

Even at 720 they are still one of the best I have seen. Don't forget Sky, Freesat and Freeview is still only 720 so is it really worth the change?

Actually Sky, Freesat and Freeview HDs native resolution is 1080i so you'll get less scaling artifacts with a
1080p panel anyway.
