Fitted cupboards - how much??!!
Discussion
SWMBO got Sharps in the other day to quote for fitted cupboards along one wall. Now our bedroom isn't that big but their quote, with one or two extras was £5,000! Is that a s
t lot, especially given they are supposedly offering 70% off atm, or am I out of touch?
Add in a couple of large sliding doors, a smallish cupboard and some desk type thing in the other room and the quote was £8,100
I know there is some skill in doing this but FFS they're only cupboards.

Doing this myself at the moment as part of the whole bedroom makeover. I couldn't believe how much these built in wardrobes cost especially when they seem to be mostly made of the cheap foil wrapped chipboard so not even real wood. The sliding doors never seem very sturdy either, so I don't think they would last for years and years like some existing furniture we have.
We did look at Hulsta since they do actually have real wood insides, but funny thing was I had to ask as it looked like melamine to me.
As you might be based not far from me, there is a place in Camberley called 'DIY Homefit' which do custom made cupboards, but it's up to you to fit them (or find someone else to fit them for you). They at least had a decent range of different doors and insides/edge treatments, but still weren't real wood.
In the end we've decided that plain old Ikea ones will do since we have some 14 year old free standing Ikea wardrobes in our current bedroom that will still do for our spare room. Not very PH, but even with all the fancy internal LED lighting and trouser rails, etc a 2.5 metres wide is going to be about £600 instead of £2,600 from DIY homefit. If we fancy changing the doors in a few years time it's easy enough and cheap to do as well.
I think they're a bit like kitchens only there doesn't seem to be much variation in terms of quality, just price. I think my sister paid something like 3k for a built in wardrobe and that's up North and it was only a very basic looking wrapped foil type chipboard/MDF carcass. I did find a local carpenter who would make them all using real wood, but then the price was going towards 7-8k which I couldn't justify...the whole room including adding a Juliet balcony isn't going to cost much more than that (I hope
).

I had a very similar shock from the same company but 7-8 years ago...I ended up diy'ing it from wickes.
They do an "off the shelf" custom fitted wardrobe thing. Basically you can buy doors and side panels, as well as fixings etc, then trim it to fit in your space.
It was a factor of 10 cheaper than sharpes
