As per the title really.

After looking into it, Sky want about £250 to change just the box plus an additional £5 per month for the HD channels.

So, anyone have any recent experience of blagging a free box upgrade and, ideally, an upgrade to the Sky HD package for free as well?

Yep. Just call and ask to leave if you're out of contract. Worked for me. Didn't want to leave, but was prepared to.

Got 2 new HD boxes (1 was meant to be serviced but he just replaced it without a seconds thought) and free Sky Sports for my trouble. Took all of 10 minutes.

If you agree to take the Entertainment Extra + pack you should be eligible for a free box but you'll be in another 12 month contract.

This. Call them up tell them you want to leave - too expensive / prefer Netflix or somesuch. Be confident in your desire to leave but dont ask for any freebies. They will eventually throw all sorts of offers your way to make you stay, I'm sure an HD box could easily be thrown into the bargain - personally I'd try for more.

I currently pay £10 per month for Sky HD with entertainment pack (and will do until November), have had a £60 credit on my bill and despite leaving and rejoining again a couple of months later am not in any fixed term contract. All because I left, rejoined then threatened to leave again.

Just go out and buy a second hand sky HD box, Can pick them up for £20 odd quid (as i have a few times). Then swap your viewing card over. Phone sky to get them to register the new box with the card, and proceed to pay the extra fiver a month for HD.

Exactly what I was going to put. My HD box cost me £10.
