In the market for a new TV and wish for the best picture possible, was considering the Samsung F8000 (LED) or Samsung F8500 (plasma) Any comment or advice would be greatly appreciated. Should I be considering any other model of TV in this price rang (have a budget of 2-3k

I can't comment on the Samsungs (Most of their stuff is good though), but I've had a Panasonic Plasma TV for the last few years and I've yet to see a picture I feel betters it (and I spent years being disappointed with Flat Screen TVs before choosing it)

I would always consider a Panasonic Plasma before committing to anything else personally.

Only reason I can think of to not buy plasma is if you want to play loads of games, as you can suffer screen burn with plasma

I went to the Samsung lab when the es8000 was launched, they spent the day telling us how the 8000 was better than any plasma, but I really had to beg to get them to show me their demo on the plasma, and when they did, motion blur much reduced on plasma

And better blacks!!!

I'd agree with both comments and would personally prefer a Plasma myself. Having said that LCD is getting much better these days and isn't that far off in some cases.

P.S. Anybody else get annoyed with manufacturers calling their sets LED when clearly they're LCD with an LED back light.

I get annoyed with people who say LED is so much cheaper to run than plasma...

A, the gap is much smaller than it was

B, IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR BILLS/THE ENVIRONMENT SO MUCH WHY ARE YOU BUYING A 50" TV!!!!!

Screen burn hasn't been an issue for plasmas for a while in my experience and from what I've read from reviews. Image retention is another matter wink

villageidiot, just read some of the reviews of Panasonic's 2013 plasma range and you'll want one smile

Panasonic VT65 series plasma set are the ultimate at the moment

http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Panasonic-VT65-VT6...

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-tx-p55vt6...

We also sell the F8000 series Samsungs and they're excellent sets as well but not quite at the level of the VTs

I love the discussion regarding power consumption between Plasma and LED lit LCD sets, most people
are told utter ste by ordertakers in the "big" stores, with some real horror stories about plasma sets
costing £50 per week to run! (I honestly had this recently in my store!)

Consider the following two photos

These are photos of the consumption sticker which is a legal requirement these days and has to be shown
on the product, these are actual figures showing annual usage based on approx 4 hours per day running time.

Plasma 330 KWh per year

LED lit LCD 120 KWh per year

Difference looks horrific doesn't it? its over 250%, based on that you'd pick the LCD set everytime? or would you?

Actual costs based on a unit of electricity costing on average 15p makes things look a little different

Plasma 330KWh times 15p £49.50 per annum
LED lit LCD 120KWh times 15p £18.00 per annum

Difference of £31.50 per year not a lot is it just over 60p per week for better performance, I know which way
I'd go!(i'm on my 3rd plasma and am waiting till next month to buy a new 55VT65)

Now to all those people who say well i'd still have the F8000 consider one final fact.....

Cost of the Samsung UE55F8000 is on average is £2499
Cost of the Panasonic TX-P55VT65 is on average is £2149

Difference of means that to break even you'd have to run the sets for 10 years to break even on the running
cost differences,

Makes you think doesn't it.. not forgetting that the Panasonic comes with a 5 Year warranty FOC if bought in
an independent store like mine....

The 55f8000 comes with a five year warranty if bought from a certain large non-independent...

But I would still have the plasma!

True, but they forget to tell you about the 20% per year write down figure they now levy on the replacement value of the set!
The Panasonic warranty is a day one to year five replace if it can't be repaired warranty.

And no, if you buy a Panasonic set from them it's their warranty, not the manufacturers warranty.

Can anyone tell me if the new OLED sets are closer in performance to plasma? And what the hell is the difference between OLED and LED anyway?

I was in this position just a few weeks ago and ended up going for the 50vt65 panasonic, the picture is absolutely amazing and the features are excellent.

I found avforums extremely useful when looking at the various options.

Panasonic over Samsung everytime.
Better picture and build quality with Panasonic although Samsung have more crappy gimmicks, but if you want picture quality and sound(VT) and a 5yr warranty go for a Panasonic.

Simplest way to put it.

Pioneer plasmas are still probably the best screens there have ever been.
Panasonic bought out Pioneers technology when they stopped making TVs and hence have the best pictures now

LED is thinner, cheaper, lighter, brighter and uses less electricity. But it doesnt have as good a picture and on fast moving images it tends to have blur and artefacts and less deep blacks despite what the boy in currys will tell you.

I will never own an LED until perhaps they get proper Oled working, but I'll have a 4k set by then !!

Samsung is a purveyor of cheap ste usually based on designs and ideas genuinely intelligent people invented first that they then backwards engineer and use volume to make for less money. The day they actually come up with a real ground breaking innovation thats ahead of the game and quality I will probably fall down dead from shock !!

Happy hunting.

Had the chance to check out 2 mates TV upgrades, a Panasonic GT50B (model down from the VT50B) and one of these Samsung's. im no real expert or anything but this is what i noticed:

http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/samsu...

watching the champions league final through sky HD on the plasma the picture was perfect. very clear, rich yet natural looking colours and the the image was always very smooth. even with the football, players etc changing direction very quickly there was no blurring or juddering that i noticed. The glass front is fairly reflective in direct sunlight (but not unwatchable) and the TV did run very hot, probably fairly normal for a plasma but over time it would actually start to heat the room...

With the Samsung we watched a Blu Ray movie on it, the picture appeared to move very smoothly (sorry if this isn't the most technical term)and while the overall image was almost as good as the plasma i personally think the Panasonic was slightly sharper and during the movie when a guy was running fast against a silver fench near a white wall the TV did not like this and the fence appeared to judder

Think when i upgrade in a few months it will be plasma

I am on my 3rd Panny Plasma, and to be honest I have yet to see anything for the same money or a fair bit more come close.for true natural colors and deep blacks. I think for movies on blu ray plasma is best

I had a Samsung 55' LED/LCD for a year and it is a cracking set. The only real fault is the motion stuttering with fast moving objects such as footballs.

However, there is no denying that the Panny has a more natural picture.

After owning both I would choose the Panasonic every time.

on a slightly practical note
i have 3 panasonics
a plasma
an lcd
and the latest thinnest led, however on this one even though its very thin/slim the hdmi leads come out of the back at right angles to the set, meaning that if you dont want to bend your hdmi cables you have to have the set about 2 inches from the wall, pointless being slim. if you want to wall hang it you have to buy right angle adapters or take the plaster out behind it :-(
my other panasonic led the cables come vertically from below so its not an issue.
