Chaps, I have a Panasonic VT50 connected via HDMI ARC to a Philips soundbar (integrated subs - no wireless sub). The bass is good, but obviously not earth shattering. I have a spare Musical Fidelity A3.2 dual mono amp (old, but rather good). Could I connect it via the TV's audio out to a passive subwoofer to boost my bass (level controlled by the amp's volume)? Or does using the ARC switch off the TV's audio out? Also willing to try an active sub if that would not work, but I am guessing that the issue would be the same - ARC bypassing the TV's audio out.

The usual googling is not helping.

The TV is getting better and better with running in. The Soundbar has lovely sound too (although useless virtual surround) - just not a great deal of bass. I don't want to go to full 5.1 or 7.1 for cabling/room layout/space reasons.

Hope you're well and still enjoying that lovely Aero 8!

If you have a separate (analogue) headphone amp, it would perhaps be easiest to test it with that, using headphones to check it is getting a signal. Then you don't have to drag wires across the room to connect your MF amp to the TV and to a set of speakers, just to check it works.

Hope that helps!

Arj - thanks, and I am! About to go for a new windscreen sadly, after a large stone found itself in my way...love Morgan, but the wait for that special, heated screen is measured in months...

I don't have a headphone amp. tdm34 commented on another thread that the optical out on the TV should work. So I am going to try to hook up the amp (if it has an optical in - doubtful) and run it through to the sub which has its own internal crossover (it'sa monster PMC thing). Hopefully using the amp's volume as a level should work. All a bit bodged, to be honest. At this rate, it may simply be easier to invest in a decent 5.1 system and have the cable chased into the walls...frown

Sorry to hear about the wind screen. Reminds me of my TVR days...

Your Musical Fidelity is all-analogue, so it has no optical input. It's a great amp though.

Yep - just found this out last night. Damn!

All the active subs I can find have RCA inputs too, no optical. Double damn.

You can get a Toslink / Digital Coaxial to RCA Digital to Analogue converter for 11 quid on Amazon - that should be easily sufficient for a sub. Annoying to have another thing that needs powering, but hardly the end of the world...
