Hi guys, In the position where we are buying a house that is completely gutted and needs a lot of renovation doing. At the moment I have a couple of airport express' linking rooms in my current house. But i'm thinking if I have a blank canvas I would like to look into the full built into the roof speaker setup for the ground floor of the new place.

does anyone have this done? What sort of cost am I looking at? Is it completely astronomical? And aside from just looking cool, is it any better than just having 3-4 SONOS standalone speakers around the house? Any advantages? cheers!!

I love having everything linked up, and being able to play my media everywhere in the house, so whilst I have an empty shell of a house, anything else I should be considering network/gadget wise?

Realistically you need to budget between £700 and £800 per zone for an in-ceiling Sonos system.

The Connect Amp is £400.00
Contractor series Monitor Audio CT165's have an RRP of about £200.00 a pair.
Then you need speaker cable - £150 for a box of 305m
and ideally a fire hood per speaker to prevent fire spreading into the floor joists. £20 each.

Then if you employ me, I need to charge you for the install time.

If you are going open plan then there are things you can do to use a single zone and share it between multiple speakers, but that becomes a bit more bespoke in design.

Does that help?

That helps massively! Thank you.
New place will be on the Surrey/Berkshire border, which appears to be quite close to you. So when I actually get into the house (fingers crossed) in about a month's time. I'll drop you a PM and maybe get a proper quote from you for the lot?

Hi Nick,

Vex is about right on pricing.

I am also a custom installer and also use the CT165s they have a nice magnetic grille that sits nearly flush with the ceiling.

If you want to go one step further i can offer a full media server that can rip CD's,DVD's and Bluray discs and serve them up to any network connected device ie smart TV, appleTV or something else.
I offer a full design service and can supply all of the AV equipment you need

If vex is not in your area and not wanting to tread on anyones toes i cover that area and would be happy to quote you.

Hehe, I am so right, you posted that three times!

Personally, one word of caution on BluRay rips, they take a lot of hard drive space and I am very cautious over the licensing issues of copies.

IMHO it is moving well towards full on streaming, or in the case of Sky Boxes, downloading to the planner to watch later.

Vex,

dunno why that happens i seem to post 3 times on all my posts lol

Blu ray ripping is ok as long as you have the original disc in your possession. A license is available for the ripping at a cost of around £55.
As for storage my servers can take 12TB of Hdds. the server software is on a SSD that is separate to the Hdd's.
The sever also has a torrent server built in and a web streaming program that allows stored content to be played over the internet to any device.
I am in the process of working on a software hack to allow more storage space.

The servers are Linux based and ultra reliable. All of them run headless with access through a web page.

cases can now be had without fans and therefore ultra quiet

This all sounds awesome, will definitely be messaging you guys for some quotes when i'm ready to go. The new house is a completely renovated bungalow, so would probably only need a speaker in the kitchen roof, one in the bathroom, and a couple in the lounge. Could i keep costs down slightly and use non sonos branded speakers, but just use some of the sonos equipment such as the amps to set up zoning etc? I don't think my budget is going to stretch to all premium Sonos branded equipment!

I'm getting a bit carried away with ideas here aswell, but is it possible to have a tablet running some sort of jukebox/sonos software with all my music on, then mounted flush into a wall in the kitchen and linked up to all these zones in the house? Effectively giving an in built jukebox for the house?

For streaming Bluray, any reason not to use a QNap running Plex and a Plex client (Mac Mini for instance?)

Agreed, Plex is available directly on Samsung screens as well.

It is all ineresting stuff, but for some of the stuff we play with you need seriously deep pockets!

Sure do Vex, but also it can be done on a budget. ie server with say only 4Tb of storage then add more later. The ct165 monitors. you could go one size smaller again a compromise but a saver.

just quoted a 7 zone sonos system with intergrated server and 3 panny screens all linked up with ATV and SKY HD, just waiting for the email to say go go go

I dont think that is correct. As I understand it every time you play the film a license key should be checked on the actual disk. You could make copies of DVD and CD for personal use provided you own the disk. BluRay is different.

Your system may strip the key off the disk and present it every time but as I understand it this circumvents the copy protection rather than works according to it and as such stands a chance of being switched off at any time should the movie studios decide to make a big deal of it. This makes it difficult for a commercial entity to resell such a product IMHO. What are you going to do if Disney decide to sue the manufacturer of the software and you for selling it? Sounds far fetched but they have sued custom installers in the US for having an advertisement picture of one of their cinema installs showing one of their films and not paying royalties. These guys are paranoid about their IP.

Vex is probably right anyway that the vast majority are going with streaming content nowadays anyway.
