AV amp and Apple Airplay
Discussion
Hi all
My bro-in-law has an Arcam AV600 AV amp and wants to use digital music on it so was thinking Sonus Connect utilising his Ipad to control it easily.
Am I right in thinking that Apple have their own version and if so, is it Airplay? Would he simply plug in the back of the amp? Where is the music stored? Can he stream music stored on the Ipad?
At this stage he doesn't have a NAS but is likely to get one at some point but needs a stop gap now.

I have Airplay set up on my Yamaha amp. My bro-in-law has an Arcam AV600 AV amp and wants to use digital music on it so was thinking Sonus Connect utilising his Ipad to control it easily.

Does the Arcam have Wi fi?
For my amp I purschased Yamaha wireless bridge then connect it to amp/router, make sure your Iphone/Ipad is connected to the same Wi fi network and you are good to go.
I stream music directly from my Iphone to receiver and it works fine. You dont store Music on the amp with Airplay just go straight into your phone select the option to send it to the amp rather than phone speakers and play music from your music library.
I use Airplay to a Denon which has it built in, but usually stream from my Mac rather than from the phone, though it's controlled with Remote from an iPhone. I ran an ethernet cable so there's no danger of dropouts if the network is busy. All works well and is simple to setup and use.
I've run an Airport Express into my Arcam HiFi amp, Airplay music from my iPad or iPhone or from my Mac, all works well. Only downside is the audio quality, the compressed AAC/MP3 sound is poor when put through a HiFi amp, I still revert to my CD's or Vinyl if I'm doing some serious listening.
You could also look at an Apple TV, no analogue audio out but does have a optical out, if the amp has a spare optical input.

STiG911 has it but if it were me I'd go with Apple TV rather than Airport Express, it brings much more to the party at the same time as being an Airplay device. If it was a Hi-Fi then not an issue but with video involved it's a no brainer. Only question is whether he plans to extend the system in the future to include more rooms, if so Sonos is ideal but that's a different conversation.
