47" or larger gaming/films TV - £500
Discussion
Hi All
Back in 2010 I picked up an ex-rental LG 50" plasma for £150. It had a very feint Dirty Dancing logo burnt into the top-right corner where someone had fallen asleep or died with the Dirty Dancing DVD in.
I only wanted it for PS3 really so it was fine, and the burn in faded after a few months. Or rather, it was replaced by other burnt in artefacts.
However, I've recently installed an Onkyo surround sound system that seems to be confusing the TV (PS3 connects to Onkyo via HDMI, Onkyo into TV via HDMI). After around 30 minutes usage the display will just go blank and the TV is unresponsive to the remote control or the buttons on the front. I'm assuming an incompatibility.
I'm happy to write off the TV given it's cost me £50 a year, so I'm looking for something new.
Can anyone recommend a set, 47" or above. Not bothered about 3D. Smart would be nice, as long as it can play from a DNLA source as that's the only feature I'd really use. Sound capabilities aren't an issue as it'll be connected to the Onkyo. Main use will be PS3, so either gaming or Blu-Ray. 1080p is a must. Budget £500.
Cheers!

Personally Id wait until next year, then get an ultraHD tv or if they are silly money (as they are now) get a discounted 1080p.
I personally think that 1080p is too lower resolution for a 47" screen.
The LG I have is only 720p and it viewed 'fine' for my usage. I can't wait until next year to play GTA5 I personally think that 1080p is too lower resolution for a 47" screen.

At this moment i'm on my pc and every now and then I glance at my 50VT20 Panasonic 1080p plasma from a distance of 3 feet and at I personally think that 1080p is too lower resolution for a 47" screen.
no point do I think that the resolution is too low! at work in a line of three I have a 65F9000 4K Samsung, the 55X9005 4K Sony and
a 60" ZT65 Panasonic 1080p plasma, and from any reasonable viewing distance the plasma outperforms both 4k sets by quite a margin!
Now! i'll accept that all three are being fed a diet of 1080p Blu-Ray footage (we are waiting for the 4k demo kit from Samsung)
but everyone who's seen the demo seems to pick the Plasma as the best picture.
I genuinely believe that 4k is only going to be needed when you go over 80" anything under that the effect will be largely invisible.
Of course when we get genuine 4k feed this all might change, but I doubt it at these screen sizes.

Turn off the HDMI control on the PS3. This should sort out the issues.
Ah right ok. I'll give that a go, thanks!
I loaded a game on the PS3 last night, and after a few minutes the screen just went blank and the TV was unresponsive. I removed the power, plugged it back in, and it was ok again.
I'm a big fan of Panasonic usually, but trying to get something decent for £500 might be a challenge.
Any thoughts on the LG 50PH660V ?
That is strange. I had exactly the same issue with my set up when I introduced an amp. It was like the amp, TV and the PS3 were having a fight.
Maybe there is a similar setting on your other sources doing the same thing.
I see that you want a new tv though so go and treat yourself. I had a guy that worked for me return to his home country. He sold me his 12 month old LG tv for $500. He had paid $1400 for it and that's still about the new price. Got myself a bargain.

Depends at what distance. Resolution and screen size are only relevant if the third parameter (distance) is taken into account. That's a good guide http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.htmlFor most viewing distances UHD will be impossible to distinguish on anything but a huge screen that most humans would find too wide / too close for a comfortable field of vision, but there will be a lot of placebo effect, no doubt.
