I remember looking a year ago and there was a lot of choice, now it only really appears to be Humax models. They get good reviews but look cheap and ugly. Any recommendations? I guess I can live with bad looks for good functionality and reliability.

Humax Foxsat recorders are very good, if a bit pricey. As you say, there isn't much else unless you go for a combo blu ray type device.

Humax have revised their range with two recorders:
and one simpler single tuner STB (which can record to en external disk via usb)
They include "free time" which is the catchup equivalent to YouView on Freeview

I wasn't initially going to go for Sky, but looking again at the channel selection for Freesat, it is pretty woeful so going to bite the bullet and just get Sky

So what channels do you actually want?

Don't forget that if you want to watch what you have recorded you have to continue paying the Murdoch tax.

I love my Sansung Freesat box - that in conjunction with the freeview tv gives us all the telly we actually need.

My experiences with a £150 Manhattan Freesat box were entirely negative. I took it back and went crawling back to Sky.

I switched from Sky+ to a Humax Freesat HD with Freetime box (I forget the model number, was around £200 with a 500GB hard drive) a couple of months ago and can't recommend it highly enough.

Easy to set up, great picture, loads of channels, easy to use remote, great programme guide and menus, and even the box is much smaller and prettier sat under the TV.

The only thing I miss from Sky is Comedy Central... but I'm not going back to paying £40 a month just for that!

Probably being a bit daft but bare with me; I've just moved to a new house. There's a dish already installed with cables coming through to the lounge. If I get a freesat box will I have to change the direction of the dish (previous occupier shad sky)?
