There's a lot of talk on here recently about Sonos, and I love the idea of it. However, my budget just doesn't stretch to it for now. Mostly as a matter of interest, is there any reason (save warranty and support) not to go hoovering up old zp80/90 units from ebay? I ask as I have enough hifi's, and it's just the connectivity!

Are they compatible with the newer stuff?

They are but good luck at trying to get them at a decent price.

Or have a look for Squeezebox units on Ebay. Virtually the same thing, not quite as slick and do need a server running somewhere.
Or if you are geeky/technical don't mind getting you hands dirty go for a RaspberryPi and any number of media players inc Squeezebox, XBMC, RaspyFi etc etc.

I've had play with the squeezebox software client. While it works well, the sync drops out of time sometimes when playing the same track across multiple devices. I have also been looking into raspberry pi options....

Interesting. I don't think I've ever had the synch drop out on the hardware devices. I have had it out of synch between the hardware and ipad client I use (Ipeng).
As I don't use the ipad for playback very often and when I do it's away from the hardware it's not really been an issue for me.
