Howdoo,

I have a question about Freeview, I'm a complete imbecile when it comes to technology but I bought a Sony LCD TV say about five years ago that has built-in digital TV, now a friend of mine has a Freeview box and can receive loads more channels than I can (for example ITV4 etc)they just bought a Freeview box to work their old TV so my question is, how do I get these extra channels? I went to a very large local electrical store and asked if purchasing a Freeview box would free up a few more channels but they told me no it wouldn't, unless my TV isn't picking up all of the normal channels?

You're advice is most gratefully received.

My Sony is about the same age, tried re-tuning but still struggled to pick up Film4 and a few others.

Brought a second-hand YouView box and got around an extra 50 odd channels, mostly rubbish though!

Yes I'm aware of the differences between you/you're, I simply made a minor error and didn't correct myself but at least I got my own username correct hey? tongue outlaugh

Yes I've tried re-tuning it, I'm in Jersey which has always been a bit backward when it comes to TV reception, we got digital much later than the UK mainland.

Really? that's quite interesting, there's no way I've got 50 channels so if that's the average amount of Freeview channels then my TV is not receiving them all and the dud information given to me at in the shop was given possibly on the assumption that I was receiving the standard amount.

Just checked and I have got 128 channels on the YouView box. Only got around 70ish on the Sony. The in-built tuner was only SD too, so no HD channels.

Freeview is free, they do not offer any packages. Not sure what your wife purchased.

Cheers, 70 channels on the Sony?!! bloody hell, I have about 17/18 channels (television channels) so perhaps the Freeview box might be the way to go.

Thanks chaps.

I'll check tomorrow, but she has said several times'freeview' with the only add on, initially being the children's channels. I'll try to find what this outfit were called.

Until then I'll remove the post in the interests of fairness - and re-flame the culprits when confirmed.

Wouldn't be surprised if it is the former as that's who she has her internet and phone with, but will check and confirm.

I reckon the French are sucking your channels away...

Alternatively get a Freesat tuner and plug in to your TV. Channel number and range very similar to Freeview and you then don't need to worry what's being transmitted locally from the Les Platons transmitter. HTH

I would guess you either have a poor aerial or a weak signal.

Where I am renting at the moment I only get about 12 Feeeview channels due to am old, badly aligned aerial.

Aerial quality aside (my guess at the issue, some tuners are better than others, and the way they are integrated).

I had to re tune my JVC with the aerial out so it lost the info then power off for a minute or so (mains off) then retune with the aerial in to re populate the channels.

That said, a few months later the onboard digital tuner died so bought an external tuner and used a scart input (CRT TV).

Tried a search of the net with your model number and the issue? Might be a simple fix.

OP, enter your details here. You will get a lot of technical stuff about Freeview transmitters and where to point your aerial. Uncheck "Detailed View" and you will get a list of channels available to you.

Not all Freeview is equal, my brother lives in High Wycombe and has a limited number of channels.

According to this checker : http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/coveragechecker/main/di...

Jersey (which is not part of the UK and thus is subject to different copyright licences) doesn't receive the full Freeview service. Try your own postcode (I put in a guessed Jersey code) and the checker should give an idea of which channels you ought to receive.

OP, blame the French, they have nicked all the available bandwidth which limits the frequencies available in the CI and in turn the available TV channels. Your best option is to go Freesat.

You were right - it was TalkTalk, conniving scum that they appear to be.

This. We are on the Isle of Man and it's the same with a very limited number of freeviews channels being broadcast. It doesn't matter what freeview kit you buy they physically aren't transmitting the channels in your area.

Buy a freesat box from Humax
