My local Blockbuster has closed which means there is nowhere local for renting Blu Ray movies.

What do I need to watch HD movies from Netflix?

I have a 5.1 system being driven by an Onkyo Amp. I use optical connections from my Sky box and Blu ray player for the audio.

Unfortunately my laptop only has HMDI out, and no separate digital audio output. Will the sound be OK?

Alternatively would I be better off buying either AppleTV or WD TV?

ATV3 will do it, I have that plugged in to my home cinema system and it works very well. Also my home cinema has it built in too so that's the best option for me.
Laptop in to the TV is OK but a bit of a fiddle and more cables.

Plug the laptp directly into the amp via HDMI and away you go. Just make sure all the audio outputs in the laptop are set up correctly.

Has anyone else tried the Netflix that was just added to Virgin Media TiVo?
Only watched some 80s TV series so far but quality was poor. Has anyone had a better picture with more modern / hd content? 5.1?

I tried to set this up on Tivo last night, wouldn't connect and was very slow in it's attempts to do so.

Ended up downloading the latest software on the PS3 and watched it through that, great quality and smooth stream.

Still amazes me what you get for £5.99 a month.

Anyone know how fast your broadband needs to be to run Netflix without the buffering every few mins?

it would have to be a pretty terrible connection to be buffering a lot. i've used netflix over loads of connections including hotel wifis etc and i don't think it's ever buffered, the picture quality will drop from time to time especially right at the start of a programe but thats about it!

Does Netflix have a website listing their UK films ?
Wifey has signed up, but it would be useful to find a film that I want to see, before she seizes the remote control....

For modern content netflix runs in 1080p (from the ps3) and 5.1.

If you run it on your TiVo box you will be limited to 1080i by the TiVo box output, although it's still pretty good.

This thread reminded me that I get Netflix free from a mobile phone deal, so I have now set it up on the Wii. Seemed to work well.

I tell you what I don't like about Netflix, Lovefilm, Blinkbox and the lot of them - haven't found anyway of filtering out unsuitable fiims from the main menu. Great when I have got part way through an 18 rated film only for it to pop up right next to cartoons that my six year old wants to watch.

Cancelled my membership as a result.

You can have several profiles on Netflix can't you? Although they dont seem to be password protected?

I was a Netflix member for a day today before cancelling, the quality was fine but the choice all seemed lacking to me.

There is a huge amount on Netflix, just not the latest and greatest.

Its brilliant for catching up on series though. Although the series I watched started great and ended up crap, thats not really netflix's fault. smile

There's a lot there but there's a lot not there as well, equally a lot of what is there is also available elsewhere for free. But it is each to there own, it just was a disappointment to me.

On our Netflix app it gives you a choice of kids or regular as it starts up.

Both my WDTV box certainly gives you the option and I think there is a tab on the web browser, navigate to that and set as a favourite for the kids?

On demand HD films. You want ATV. Netflix is good but limited.

Apple TV is full HD and almost never buffers. Dead easy to use and has loads of other features as well.

As others have said, it's not great for films, but for TV series like Breaking Bad, and also their own stuff like House of Cards, it can't really be beaten.
