Chaps,

Looking to buy some new AV stuff and take advantage of some black friday / clearance discounts. Starting from scratch and not looking to spend the earth, so won't be pairing it with anything too special just yet, probably just floorstanders to start with. Will be used for ATV and Xbox.

Cheap Yamaha AVR on Amazon

Seems to get decent reviews. Anyone got one?

I don't have a 673 but I am happy with my Yamaha. This model does get good reviews but would you have any issues with the power supply on a US model? Also, I believe some of the UK units are tuned differently for the UK market.

Available at Richer Sounds for reasonable money: http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/y...

Sorry, probably should have pointed out it's for use in the US.

I have an older Yamaha RX A 710 Home Theatre receiver and it is an excellent piece of kit with loads of power and lots of rear jacks etc. If its on offervia Amazon.com yes buy it.

That looks like the receiver I have as part of my Yamaha surround sound setup.

I think its really good, its certainly dealt well with everything I've put through it (films, xbox, apple TV etc)

Would be interested to hear what you think of it.

I've had my DSP-A595a for ages (15 years?) and still like how it sounds, but it lacks DTS HD, DD MA, room correction, has no DDMI sockets etc so decided to 'upgrade' to a Sony HD820. While the Sony is alright I'm not convinced it sounds as good as the Yamahha for 2 channel music and it's a bit tricky to use, with some very odd features, e.g. it prefers to play ARC audio over any other source meaning you have to switch that feature off, it's not very flexible about how it handles the sub woofer (you have to have the DSP enabled, so you can't run a '2.1' system with it) so I have been maybe thinking about relegating that to a bedroom setup and getting a Yamaha instead...

Yamaha all the way for AV amps... Have an old AZ1 and an even older A1082 that are still doing sterling service after literally decades for the 1082 - doubt you'll be disappointed

Another vote for Yamaha amps. Bought one from RS in Brighton but 2 days later the power switch tripped out, returned expecting a repair but paid extra and replaced it with another higher spec DSP 757, which we still have 8 years later. Just bought PS4 and LG 42 smart tv and just use optical through it as too old for HDMI. System I bought has fairly budget Yamaha speakers but still sounds great IMO.
