Best £500 TV?

Hi all. My dad's after a new TV and has asked me to source one.......great.

So for a budget of £500 and a decent size (min 42") what's he best off buying at the moment?

He's a bit of a brand snob, so prefers Sony or something like. He's seen a 46" Sony for £509 at John Lewis with 5 year guarantee. Am I going to find anything better?

He's not bothered about Smart TV, etc. Just a good quality 1080p picture. Is Plasma old hat these days? What is best LED or LCD?

That size and budget the Sony KDL42W653 seems a good bet.

Tescos are doing a 51" samsung plasma for just under 500 at the moment.
