Hello and happy new year guys.
The time has come to replace the TV. Now, I am no electrical expert , I am just looking for a excellent Picture
Quality TV that will be used to watch normal programs, Blueray films and occasional Play Station game play.

I was impressed with the LG 47LA660v television, good looking picture and on offer at Currys for £599, making it just what
I want to pay.

However, I have now been told that a plasma TV would give a much better picture quality, so I thought I would ask those
Who are much more knowledgeable than me their thoughts???

Thanks guys.

Be quick because plasma technology has reached its zenith and isnt going any further, so no more development from people like Panasonic.. They do offer the best picture for films and sport, but they also take a little setting up. Samsung and LG will continue to make plasmas.

LED's are where the technology is going, and these have improved hugely over the last two years. The technology is closing in on where plasmas are now, but the production costs re cheaper and the dark colours are not as attractive as plasmas.....more artificial.

The way forward is 4K but not today or in 2014. Buy current technology not the next big thing because OLED and whatever is next are not the future, they are a step forward.

Set a price limit, look at some screens and then decide what you want from either a plasma or an LED.....gaming, films, everyday use or more for sports and the bigger events ie blu ray and HD.

It's generally accepted that plasma has the next picture but it's not the best choice for everyone. Loads of info on the internet, just google 'Plasma vs LED'. As said above, 4k OLED is the way forward eventually.

Sony and Panasonic have split up their joint OLED venture after only a year frown A pity as those OLED TV that are currently available look fantastic and actually having proper blacks is something that even plasma can't manage.

I'll be waiting for 4K OLED as already mentioned wink Not due a replacement for another 4 years so hopefully something good will have happened.

You've just seen badly calibrated LCD sets (LED is just the type of backlight, they're still LCD). I've had plasma TVs for 7 years purely for the black levels but LCD is just as accurate when calibrated correctly.

My 6 year old 720P Panasonic plasma still takes a lot to beat. A family member commented over xmas about its 'richness of colour' vs her brand new LCD. Also a mate just spent £1K+ on a Samsung LED Smart TV and I'm very unimpressed. It looks great on still shots and those HD wildlife programs but still suffers terribly from ghosting.

On my way to buy the last of the Panasonic plasmas today. Think I'll stretch to the 65inch. I've looked at the new 4k ones and it's pretty clear that they've got a lot more to give yet and anything I buy now in the new technology will be more dated more quickly than the last of the plasmas.

Quite possibly smile For me it's all about the blacks, with bad blacks you just can't get the contrast. I'd love to see an OLED set with real black.
