Discussion
Just renovated my home, and no cables. aerials etc anywhere, all nice and true. There is fast WIFI, and I need to buy a TV, as have none.
So, starting from scratch, but want minimal damage to the property - can I run TV channels over WIFI, and therefore have a TV in lounge, laptop upstairs, running something that allows a set of channels to be visible over the net ?
Thanks.

- You've just renovated your house and not installed ethernet cables?
- How do you receive your broadband?
- What fast is your broadband?
- How fast is your wifi?
- Where are you?
- Do you have neighbours with wifi that may interfere with yours?
- Do you want HD channels?
- Do you plan to watch TV on your laptop?
- Can you get Virgin Media cable as you don't need an aerial or dish with that?
- ...etc.
Thanks for questions, I will try to answer.
Tough renovation in Exmoor of a 1927 house, with deep granite walls, that I passionately restored as my 'last home', so to speak.
Was covered in decades of wires, aerials, etc from each technological change, so took the lot out...and now have wireless comms for thermostat/controller to Heating boiler, wireless alarm, wireless internet. BT broadband - seems fast, main router is in the lounge, and on 2nd floor in any bedroom, laptop runs happily. I could get some specific performance data, but it seems fast. A friend was watching Bulgarian 'live' chat shows each evening while staying there....never seemed to pause, or anything strange.
Broadband is via BT telephone point, router.
Exmoor, west somerset coast.
Detached house, and I can't think neighbours are close enough - and nearest are...85 years old !
I ordered BT simply because...it was easy and came with the phone. What I enjoy are: mornning News, Bloomberg also...then in the evening to relax with either film (from external drive), or if something on TV, but not a regular follower of sitcoms, etc. So, if has channels to hop amongst fine, but not essential. If a internet based package, then I would choose, but starting from zero.
I don't watch on a laptop, but am open to the idea....as study is on 2nd floor, so news feed would be very handy.
TA24 postcode....if that helps, but not sure about Virgin.
You listed a few (eg BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD and Demand 5)...I will check, but in essence, a standard 'Freeview' set of channels is all I have been used to, plus my 1 TB external drive of movies and series kindly updated by my daughter !
Thanks. Sorry if waffling - but the TV is the next subject to address, and I was hoping a wireless / wifi driven solution was feasible.
Thanks again. Big Ant
the basic channels (but not necessarily live).

WiDi from Intel is available - if you have a recent laptop with it built in. (Maybe it exists for desktop motherboards too, not sure).
You'd also need a receiver from Belkin or similar which plugs into the TV via HDMI, and the laptop would need a TV capture card or internet streaming of TV.
Bit of a complicated solution, though.
