New DVD player!!!
Discussion
Either of your suggestions would be fine, though the Panasonic player makes sense from a remote control point of view as your TV remote will be able to control it (probably the Sony too for that matter, but with more fiddling about).
Having compared a basic Sony with a £500 Oppo player I found that the BluRay image was NO different between the two. This is on a near 10' wide projector screen. So don't be conned into thinking you need anything special for BluRay playback especially on a smaller TV screen. I kept the Oppo for other reasons and I bought it knowing this, but it would be a waste if bought purely for 'better picture quality'. Granted DVD upscaling would be better on the Oppo, but even then I have an external video processor which does a better job still. Even then it doesn't make DVDs look like HD, just that they are then acceptable to watch on a big screen.

Hi guys looking for some advise need to buy a new DVD player was looking at the Sony BDPS790 or the out going Panasonic DMPBDT500 to match my VT65, which would be best or are there any other suggestions????
Thanks
As said, it's just a digital transport at the end of the day. I don't see any point in spending a fortune. You're TV will have built-in upscaling etc which may well be superior to to the BRP anyway. Thanks
I have a Panny Plasma and a Sony BRP and I can control the Sony using the Panny remote via Viera-Link without any problems. I chose the Sony purely because it's network and SMART functions were better than the Panny TV. It also gives better coverage of all formats than one supplier and it's a lot cheaper to replace the BRP for a £100 or so to get all the latest SMART features, than the TV.
Networking and SMART may be of no interest to you though. Performance wise, I don't you'd notice a difference between the 2, except maybe loading times. So I'd looking at all the other features.

I have two of the Panasonic BDP 500's. Great machines for Blu Ray and unless I stepped upto buying an Oppo 103EU there isnt anything better for under £170.
Note my comments comparing the Oppo 93 against a basic (£100) Sony player on a projector screen...please don't expect a 'better' picture if you take this upgrade. I do like the features of the Oppo but I didn't buy it for picture quality (source direct to allow my Lumagen to upscaling/deinterlace, subtitle shift for use with an anamorphic lens set up and just the general speed/support from Oppo).Recently bought the Sony BDPS790 to replace an older player, and don't see me changing it for a while.
My only gripe would be it doesn't seem to like all .avi file formats like the older S470 did, but does add support for mp4. I use it to watch stuff streamed from a NAS box as much as watching discs though.
