Now this looks to tick a lot of boxes!

http://www.sony.net/Products/4k-ultra-short-throw/

though I would suspect it could be a little pricey!!!

From what I read in terms of CES coverage, this is more a novelty/lifestyle PJ - aimed at premiership footballers and the like who want something that looks good, but doesn't have to provide a great image.

Sony 4k PJ's are very very capable, but it would be the VW500 or 1000/1100 that folks would go for if they wanted a good image IMO.

I saw it posted elsewhere with a suggested price tag of 30K, though not sure if this was $ or £ conversion. As you say the VW500/1100ES models would likely give a better result for less money.

LG have a similar product, albeit not 4K, but ultra short throw..... Honestly, the picture was terrible.

I am sure that the Sony will be better, but as mentioned above the 500 & 1100 are very good.

That looks very smart. I like it a lot, well out the price range for most of us though.

The problem with short throw projection is usually in the lens. Due to the very wide angle it’s almost inevitable that there will be some distortion and at the edges of the image the focus can be quite soft. My advice would be unless you absolutely must use a short throw projector, don’t. They are getting better but throw up a few test patterns and you will see the problems.

As for 4K stuff, patience is your friend. There will be a lot of 4K gear at ISE in February, most of this will take six months to filter down to business level and another six months to hit sensible consumer prices. Once TI starts doing 4K DLP chips the price will fall through the floor.

One last thing, 4K looks the dogs’ bits! There is a distinct lack of content but that will change. I did a recent project with (can’t say!) using a 4K camera in an operating theatre and viewing the output on a 4K 110” screen. It was better than real life, the contrast and colour depth was stunning.

Patience grasshopper, patience......

Heres a noob question...... How can they project black/dark images onto a white wall? The only way I can see this working is when the room is pitch dark/ curtains closed.

You can't! BUT fortunately for us the brain just makes it up. You don't even need a darkened room, so long as there is a brighter part of the picture somewhere your brain just makes it up so you think you are looking at a black part of the picture (even if it is actually white). There is some science behind it but no one cares.

You don't have to use a white wall, you can get grey screens or even black ones.

But if you use a black screen in a lit room then you need a very bright projector to see anything.

I never understand when people want to use a projector in daylight, may as well just use a TV. I like that when I watch on my projector I'm forced to watch it in the dark for the best picture as it stops me from other distractions like my laptop which I tend to have on while watching 'ordinary' TV.
