Which Speakers? 2-Channel
Discussion
My B&W CDM-9NT floorstanders are just not being used to their potential, being stuck in the corner of a room without room to breathe. It's also been hinted they don't go with the other furniture... I'd also like a change so this is good news.
Currently:
- They're powered by a Cyrus DAC-XP and two Mono-X power amps.
- Fed either FLAC files or Spotify
- Sitting on slate tiles on top of a wooden floor (Suspended oak, not on a solid base)
- Against the walls, one in a corner.
I'm after some stand-mounts, not with an additional sub, that can be situated close to a wall. I like the sound from the B&W's (They were originally paired with an Arcam set-up) but I do wonder if sometimes it's a little woolly / warm and perhaps the pairing isn't revealing enough detail??
I'd need to sell the B&W's to fund the new ones - where is the best place? eBay? I've no idea really of their value to be honest. Let's say, up to £1k inc. stands for new ones? Will consider 2nd hand from a good source.
Any suggestions where to start? Also, what style suits my room situation?

Hi,
Get yourself over to the Cyrus Unofficial forums, there are some knowledgeable folk who've tried most speakers with Cyrus kit, as well as some dealers who'll be able to give offer some advice. There are plenty of speaker manufacturers who's products gel well with Cyrus but getting the room interaction is the crucial part, especially if the optimal position is not available.
Good Luck.

Sealed designs tend to cope better than reflex when close to boundaries. The new version of the SCM11 may be just what you're looking for; slightly over budget though.
The Hi-Fi mags have sections where you may be able to sell your B&Ws; alternatively somewhere like this http://www.hifi-forsale.co.uk/

Slightly 'warm' speakers are recommended for Cyrus kit, as its considered on the lean and bright side.
I think Sugdens are widely considered a good match. Depends on what you are willing to spend. there will be some terrific 2nd hand stand mount speakers at 1k - PMC, ATC, but factor in stands though cos they can get expensive for matching stands. KEF LS50 are newish speakers and may sneak in around the grand mark with stands - interesting drivers the Uni-Q

I was thinking in terms of PMC 21 bookshelf speakers, though they are front ported so whether that makes them better than rear ported if pushed into a corner. I think that they may be above budget too, though there was a pair for sale on the AVForums classifieds.
I got rid of my PMC TB2+ (rear ported) speakers as they were jammed in the room corners to fit around my projector screen and the centre was set too low as well making it boom. I've changed to sealed MK Sound on wall MP150s which are designed to be wall mounted (obviously) so part of the reason they sound so much better in my room is that they aren't being nobbled by a poor location. Location really does matter IMHO (plus having built two sealed 15" subs to go with them means I get better bass than ever before).

I heard a pair of PMC twenty 23s for the first time last week. I'd never heard any PMCs before. They made the B&W 683 S2s that I'd gone to listen to sound very inadequate.
Off topic a bit, but I'm interested in something more powerful like the twenty 24s or the Fact 8 - does anyone have experience of owning these? I must admit I'd never even considered PMC before. The other speakers that I'm considering are the Kef Reference 203/2 or 205/2.

Haven't heard them myself, but if you get in touch with Paul at Hifi Lounge he stocks PMC and he's having an open day soon. He is on PH, but I think he had to change his user name as it had hifi lounge in the name...he might be just 'Viper' now. Here is a link to the AVForums thread about his open day:
