Now that our front room is done I have dug out my AV set up - Onkyo AV receiver with 5.1 speakers, which I'm connecting to Apple TV, DVD player and TV. It isn't audiophile quality, but it meets my needs.

I've mostly wired it up (just got a few network cables to add) but it looks a mess, does anyone have any tips to tidy the wiring? Cabling for the 4 satellite speakers was added when the house was rewired, so speaker cables only need to go to a patch panel behind the amplifier, so it is mainly the cabling behind the amplifier I want to tidy.

Here's what I did to sort my cabling out. It's might be a wee bit of overkill compared to what you actually want though...

And I though I had a lot of sockets on the wall! It is more the wiring from the amplifier/TV to the wall. I have made big improvements already this evening by swapping my 6ft HDMI cables for thinner 3ft ones and the 5m coax cable for the TV aerial for a 1m version. Based on those improvements I'm going to make up some shorter speaker cables & network cables too.

How easy is it to shorten Virgin Media cables? I've got about 6ft extra on mine which could do with trimming off.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Getting rid of excess cable is a really good idea. I use small cable ties to group cables together to neaten it all up as well.

I'm not sure what sort of cable a Virgin Media one is, but if it's just co-ax, then it can be easily shortened.

I think it's a coax one with a screw on connector.

I'll dig out the cable ties. One thing I'm going to change is the ethernet cable from bright green to black, it really stands out.
