For the last couple of weeks I have been scanning the various suppliers of TV's, and can't work out what to get.

I was thinking 4k, like this one about to be released. http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/samsu...

But with no 4k content at the moment, I'm thinking of just having HD, like this one. http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/samsu...

To be honest it's doing my head in, I am of the opinion that if I buy a 4k, by the time there is content for it, I could probably buy the set for half the price.

So should I just stick with HD? and if so what is a good tv to buy. Every time I find a TV I like I hear a review that someone will say that the TV is crap. Verticle banding etc.

My budget is really up to about £3k, but would rather pay less, as the last TV I bought 3 years ago for a vast amount is now worth peanuts.

Cheers

Samsung's 64" Plasma is very good for around £2500 and as you note, it'll be a while until regular content is available at 4k.

PS64F8500ST

Right now you're smack bang in early adopter territory and whilst the 4K Samsung will undoubtably be a great screen it's unlikely to improve much on a top Plasma or LED screen with HD content, certainly not enough to justify the price.

The key spec to address with 4K screens is whether or not they have HDMI2 ports, HDMI1.4 will only accept 4K at 24fps whereas HDMI2 goes right up to 60fps, all the early 4K screens only had 1.4 which would really upset me when (and if) Sky start broadcasting 4k at 50fps... The Samsung you linked to has HDMI2 by the way.

That 8500 looks like a good TV, but I cant find anywhere that it's available.

65" on an LCD?

Christ I can't think of anything worse.

Try and find a 60" Pioneer 6090 or 500M or a 65" Panasonic VT60.

I feel OLED is the future technology but if I was buying a new screen today I would stick with a high quality plasma and see what happens over the next 24 months, before buying something amazingly advanced. I am not convinced 4K is worth the money and even if it is will the human eye notice any difference unless sitting 5 feet or less away from the screen? You will also need to upgrade the blu ray etc if buying 4K. Any Panasonic VT's still on sale?

But I don't want 60", I want 65 or 70 possibly. I was going to get a projector, but decided on a big tv instead. Whats wrong with LCD? Vertical banding??

Recently bought a 65" Panasonic VT65 and am very happy with it. It is quite reflective though, so more suitable for dark room viewing in my opinion.

Had been hoping to buy a OLED set this year however the tech is still too young. OLED is going to be sensational when it is affordably priced for the 60"+ sizes (and they stop messing about with this curved screen nonsense)

Cloudy back lighting, dodgy viewing angles, loss of resolution when motion happens (which needs extra frames inserting to try and get round it which then looks a bit artificial), lack of dynamic range as it simply can't do bright and dark in the same scene and.....well that's enough.

On a 40" screen sat in the corner and LCD is workable, you will still have most of the points above but the killer, viewing angle, should be overcome.

The problem with a 70" LCD is even when you are sat dead centre the sides start to look off as the screen is so big.

I have calibrated a few high end big LCDs now and although the owners seem ignorantly happy I think they are all so far behind a decent plasma that it simply makes them look like a complete waste of money.

If you are genuinely only ever going to sit straight in front of it, and the bottom of the screen is not going to go avove your eye level you may be OK, but anyone sitting on the edge of the sofa, forget anyone sitting on another sofa, will simply see a washed out image compared to you. There is no getting round that with an LCD, the viewing angles are terrible, and if they are bearable then the black levels are terrible. That is simply the technology.

The main problem with plasma is some people see flicker when watching it, but if you don't see this then there really is no reason to not buy into it.

This sort of scene is where LCD struggles, where you have inky blacks combined with brights right next to it.

A display needs to be able to show black as proper black and white at around 120cdm, at the same time, this is what gives the image depth and makes it look like real life, and LCDs just can't do that.
Ansi contrast is everything with displays and this is the area LCDs fall down, just the way the tech is.

+1. Also just got one of these and it is stunning. Worthy of the glowing reviews.

This is why I've lost interest in selling TVs, at that price we'd lose £50 based on the price we pay to buy the 65"! If you can get one for £2,699 then snap it up, that's a cracking price. To be fair £2,999 at RS is also very honest.

Costco are doing an 80" Sharp for sub £3k if size is important. The 90" version was £6.5k dearer and the 80" had arguably the better picture although both were showing 'Despicable Me', and animated movies always tend to look good.
