media streaming from NAS to TV
Discussion
I want to stream my NAS to my TV, need to buy the device at lunchtime and all I have nearby is:

Usually I stream to the laptop, but want to do it to the TV instead.
I have VLC on the laptop so dont care what the media format is when I play anything, I havent paid attention to what media I ripped my DVDs to when placed on the NAS, so need something that can play what the VLC program can play.
Will this do that:

Needs to be simply enough for OH and kind of a plug and play style of setup, if it needs to log into the NAS I want to do this once and forget about it.

No - ATV is very picky about formats plus it needs to have itunes running somewhere.
Unless it's an ATV2 jailbroken and with XBMC installed (that's a 3) which isn't fiddle free.
Roku box is limited in codecs supported again but will work off just a NAS once you have PLEX on it.
XBMC will do it but you need a RPi or similar to run it and it's fiddly.
I think something like a WDTV type box sounds best bet. I have no experience of these so will let others comment.

Now picked up a proper case for the pi

Just awaiting the new mini keyboard/touchpad and wifi usb dongle...
Worked out cheaper than an all in one system and I get to play with the raspberry pi again.

I recently bought a WDTV Live Streamer, hooked up to my 12Tb NAS and my Kuro.Unless it's an ATV2 jailbroken and with XBMC installed (that's a 3) which isn't fiddle free.

I've installed a custom theme, which is just eye-candy really, but is all the better for it.
It does handle just about any video format I throw at it, as I have a mixture of DVD ISO's, Blu-Ray ISO's and MKV's and it plays them all.
I don't like the remote, as it's not back-lit, so I just use the remote-control app on my ipad.
Not a bad wee box for less than £70 and there seems to be a thriving mod community online for custom firmware/themes too.

I ditched my WDTV and bought a HTPC which boots into XBMC. I've ripped all my DVDs , blue ray and CDs to my NAS and it works really well. Bit of investment required but this solution means I now listen to more music and watch more film simply because they are so accessible. With a SSD the PC boots in about 10 seconds which is faster than the old WD TV.
