Well I'll be .....
I bought a new Panasonic BluRay player about 3 years ago and connected it to my Samsung TV via HDMI.
It always comes up with a message saying 'connected to Anynet+ device' to which I've always thought, 'that's nice'!
Having just moved into my new house where all my AV stuff is in a rack in my office cupboard I have been using 2 apps on my iPhone to control the blu ray player and the AV amp. Whilst it works it seems a bit of a fag having to swap apps all the time to do something as simple as pause the player or turn the volume up.
Anyway, curiosity got the better of me the other day and I decided to read the TV manual to see what this Anynet+ is all about.
So it turns out that It's Samsungs branding for CEC - Consumer Electronics Control for those of you unfamiliar with this magical technology.
Now call me stupid, but I'd never heard of this. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it allows you to use the TV remote to control your CEC compliant HDMI devices via the HDMI cable. So in my situation my TV remote has play, stop, ff, rewind and pause buttons on it. They control the BluRay player which is in another room, inside a cupboard. Now that's bloody awesome. But it gets better. Because my AV amp is also CEC compliant, the volume controls on my remote turn the volume on my amp up and down. And the amp is in another room, in a cupboard.
What's more, and this friggin freaks me out, the TV is a Samsung, the BluRay is Panasonic and the amp is Denon. And the Samsung remote controls them all! By pointing the remote at the telly box.
How cool is that.
So, am I just a complete tard or is this technology the best kept secret of the AV industry?
It's made my week
