What's the cheapest way to get internet radio into my kitchen microsystem (Denon M39DAB) ? I can get some stations using my Samsung smart TV, but it's very slow to get started, and takes an age to change station. It's also a pain having the telly on all day just to listen to the radio. It also seems that I can only listen to stations that have Samsung-approved apps.

I don't need wireless, as the kitchen has a couple of ethernet sockets.
It'd be great if I could connect it to the Denon's USB port, as the other two inputs are already in use. Failing that, a line level switch would be needed. Do they make remote controllable phono switches?

Thinking about it, I've got an iPod touch that doesn't get used. I wonder if that would work…….

you can buy a little gadget that will plug into your hifi that will enable it to pick up bluetooth from your ipod, very cheap too, plenty on amazon

I take it you are talking about bluetooth audio adaptors that have a line output? Had a look on eBay, and there are plenty to choose from. Would still need a switch though, as both line inputs are in use.

I have had a play, and the Denon's USB input works fine with the iPod if I connect it directly, but will not work if I connect it via the Apple dock - iPod says " can only use one accessory". I guess I need to use a "passive" dock, not the Apple one that has remote?

I need to find a decent internet radio app that will let me add a few stations to a favourites list, and not keep throwing up adverts.
Also, I'd forgotten how poor the wifi is on the Touch!

Does the iPod USB connection allow playback from apps? I'd have thought it would just give the ability to play audio files on the iPod?

If it does work then the iPod could be an excellent choice, you could even install iPeng and use it as a squeezebox or other apps for all sorts of Internet radio and streaming goodness. Alternative the analogue out on the dock could be used.

As a matter of interest what are the other 2 devices you already have connected, I presume 1 will be the TV, what's the other? I'm only wondering because whatever you end up might duplicate functionality so mean you don't need 1 of the existing devices.

Yes, the USB input allows playback from apps. I've got it working, but the radio app I'm using is a bit flaky, as is the wifi connection.

Correct, one input is taken by the TV. The other device is an Airport Express, used for playing music from my server via iTunes Airplay.
I did have a quick play to see if I could use iTunes for the radio. It seemed to be geared to playing stuff from the Apple store, rather than proper radio stations, which is what I want.

If there is a way that I can get the server to stream proper internet radio to the Airport Express, that would be great - as long as I can control it from an Android tablet.

I'm having a bit of a 60's thing at the moment, so Absolute 60's is what I listen to most of the time, with a bit of Planet Rock thrown in.

BTW, the AE will solve the wifi problem, as soon as my patch leads arrive and I can connect it to the ethernet sockets that I've just fitted. AE is (will be!) wired, and is set to work as an access point.

Can't the apps on the iPod use the AE to stream to? I guess it might depend on which version of iPod it is as the earlier ones won't have a recent enough version of iOS.

Not sure about that. It's an iPod Touch gen 4, running iOS 6 point something.

Yes I believe it should be possible then, not an iOS owner myself though.

Personally I'd be tempted to install Logitech Media Server on your server, install ipeng on the touch and add the in app purchase for playback. You can also control the iPeng playback using an app on your android because thebnplayback is effectively a squeezebox.

LMS on your server could get you all your local music, online including radio and streaming services, all controllable with pretty much any device and extendible by adding more software players on virtually any hardware platform.

Got it working - iPod app streaming to Airport Express via Airplay.
I'll try LMS on the server when I've got a couple of hours to spare. Thanks for the info.
