My daughter wants a Blueray player for christmas. The one I'm looking at has HDMI and optical out, but her TV is about 10 years old so had VGA, Component/RCA in. At some point we will update her TV, but for now can I connect the HDMI to her TV?

i've looked around and there are cables available, but some say they transmit the signal only not transform it.

Is there a simple way of doing it, or are the two devices too different for it to be practical (ie cheap)?

If the TV is 10 years old then Blu Ray will not make a difference to the picture. Buy her a cheap DVD Player and a new TV instead!

The BlueRay player will cost us about £50, will play our Bluerays plus access our media server. Its not the quality we care about, its compatibility with our media.

We don't want a new TV for her if possible. We will be replacing our Bedroom TV next year, and she will get our one which is perfectly fine for her needs.

You'll need an HDMI to SCART adaptor, do a search, they're coming in around £34 for me. Don't get confused with SCART to HDMI, which will be the wrong way.

I'd buy from somewhere you can return it, HDMI can be very fussy with what it likes to interface with .

From looking at cable adaptors HDMI to VGA may be better if SCART is fussy?

Only problem is VGA does not carry audio, so you'll need a separate cable.
