Hi there, I'm a relative newbie to the world of home cinema / hifi, but I was hoping someone would be able to answer my query.

I currently have a Panasonic TX-P50GT60B Plasma Smart TV, which I use with an Apple TV to play iTunes movies and Airplay streamed ALAC audio tracks (from Tidal Audio streaming service). I also use the Netflix and BBC iplayer apps on the TV itself to watch series etc.

My question is, if I added a Yamaha YSP-2500 Soundbar / sub to my setup, and connected it by either HDMI or Optical cable, would I be able to receive the iTunes films, Netflix streams, TV etc. and process the 5.1 input so that it would work correctly? Also, if I streamed ALAC files over Airplay to the Apple TV, then sent them to the Yamaha unit via either HDMI or Optical cable, would the result through the speakers still be full lossless CD quality music?

Any help greatly appreciated before I pull the trigger on the Soundbar.

It supports lossless surround formats so as long as the sources for those are connected via HDMI those will be fine.

It doesn't support ALAC so you'll need something that's decoding that and then sending it to the soundbar via S/P-DIF or HDMI to the soundbar.

It's all in the docs on the site http://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/home...

So would the Apple TV decode the ALAC and send it over to the Yamaha soundbar and retain the full lossless CD quality level?

The Apple TV has an optical and an HDMI audio output.

It will be musical audio that I'm concerned about with ALAC yes, but not sure what it'll be processed as etc. as that's outwith my knowledge I'm afraid...

I think from the comments above, that it'll be okay to transfer the movie audio over HDMI, but I'm still not sure whether the ALAC will be delivered by the Yamaha sound bar as lossless CD quality, or whether anything will be lost along the way?
