Hi,

I'm not an audiophile so apologies in advance but does such a product exist? A small hifi that I can;

1) play CDs
2) play audio from my TV
3) DAB
4) play music from my NAS
5) and the tricky one - play music on my PC*

  • I have a PC and decent speakers in another room and I Would like to play audio from the hifi through the PC speakers - is this even possible? A rudimentary multi-room setup.
I've had a google and there are too many acronyms for my brain to comprehend in my mildly hungover state.

Budget is very much an issue and takes priority over sound quality within reason. The cheaper the better.

Thanks in advance.

A MythTv system is probably the closest, while these started out as set top boxes they are developing into generic digital multimedia devices.

The main different from your requirements is they will get the radio channels from DVB-S (Satellite) and internet radio not DAB.

This, or something similar, will meet most of your requirements. Some slight changes;

http://www.denon.co.uk/uk/product/compactsystems/n...

1) yes
2) yes, via analogue or optical input
3) not DAB, but FM and Internet Radio will cover pretty much everything
4) yes, and music on your PC
5) no. This is not possible.

I'm not aware of any mini system, in fact add conventional systems as well, that can stream its 'now playing' media to other devices. You can stream from your NAS to Mini system and PC but you won't be able to synchronise playback for proper multi-room function. The above is around £400.

This part is definitely possible using Logitech Media Server and Squeezebox players.

Unfortunately Logitech stopped making the hardware players but you can either go 2nd hand for players or use one of the strengths of LMS which is the fact it's mainly opemnsource which means you can use software players on pretty much any hardware you choose, ranging from a Raspberry Pi, your PC, any iOS or Android device and lots of others.

If your PC is on all the time anyway you run the server on your PC, then either enable a plugin to make the PC another player or install Squeezeplay to turn it into another player. Then add devices of your choosing in each of the other zones, a raspberry pi with a hifiberry DAC and PiCorePlayer software for each zone would be ideal. Any players including software players on phones can all be controlled, synced together and used just like any other SB player on your network.

Thanks for the replies - I was hoping for something out of the box ideally. If I can't manage the final option it isn't a deal breaker.

The Denon one looks good - just have to sort the man maths out and get something ordered.

Maybe a stupid question but what stops you running the headphone out of the amp to a line-in on the PC? Not very pretty but simple. You just need an amp that lets you do that (monitor) without cutting off the speakers.

This might be worth considering; it is very compact and can also be bought with 0.5TB, 1.0TB and 2.0TB hard drives built in.
