Ceiling speakers - wiring
Discussion
I have all my ceilings down and figured it would be a good time to put some wiring in for speakers.
I can think of 3 reasons to do this
1 - have multiple speakers in the living room for 'home cinema' but I have read that for proper sound I would be betetr off with standalone speakers
2 - to play music in my bedroom - again will above apply?
3 - to play music in the kitchen/bathroom - soudn quality not such as issue here.
As a starting point I figure I need to get all these wires in the ceiling sharpish - they will then all feed back to somesort of amp in the future which I can then think about how to get sound to them.
Do I then wait for the ceiling to be skimmed and hope I can find the wire when I drill for the speaker?
Should the speaker cable be kept seperate from electrical cable?
Anyone know of a good guide on all this? At the moment I am mainly thinking more about infratsructure I spose.
Also I intend to have rockwool isnualtion inbetween the joists/flooring - would this cause problems?

Standalone speakers will certainly be better, the ideal is to have them mounted facing you at ear height when sat, however for a lot of people this is not practical, if you haven't had surround sound before, ceiling speakers that angle towards the seating area are a perfect middle ground and will sound good.I can think of 3 reasons to do this

As above really, Unless your room is massive I wouldnt consider surround sound, but certainly a pair of in-ceiling speakers would sound better than the tv speakersMojooo said:

Ceiling speakers will be fine.Mojooo said:

Look for a real, or box of 16/2 speaker cable, this will be fine for what you are wanting to achieve, then run one cable to each speaker location from your amp position. Label them well and take measurement for where in the ceiling. Mojooo said:

Yes, ideally run them in separate joist spaces if you can and only cross at 90degrees to avoid interferenceMojooo said:

Fitting Rockwool insulation shouldn't be an issue, most modern speakers have a frame behind them to protect them from insulation. I would also fit fire hoods behind the speakers. This will protect the ceiling and floor above if a fire does happen but it also helps to isolate the speaker from the dust and fibres of the insulation.Hopefully this is enough of a guide for you.

I have a query about amps - coz I don't really understand them!
I believe the speakers connect to the amp which makes the sound as it were - the amp would then be connected to a music source like a CD player.
So in my case if I want the living room to play off the TV I need the speaker cables to stay in the living room don't I - as the amp would most likely be there? Liekwise music in my bedroom.
I presume I need at least 2 speakers for the TV room - obviously surround sound is 5.1 and so on so should I just bung in 3 or 4 speakers or more?
If I want to listen to the radio in the morning in the kitchen the amp can go to some other location - but that place will also have the radio - unless it talks to the amp wirelessly, right?
Can music players and the liek have buitl in amps?
I wonder if I am better of not taking everything to a central location as I am not likely to want to run them off the same amp now I have thought about it!

OK assuming I want to feed the speakers to just within the room the speaker is in, should I take them to faceplates liek this and then worry about connecting them up to a source/amp later?

I presume the above takes 2 cables for a stereo system?
